61% of cargo transport in Brazil is by road

According to the Brazilian Association of Truck Drivers, road transport represents 61% of cargo transport in Brazil

The road modal is the main and most important in the Brazilian territory. The 2018 CNT Yearbook reveals that in the last three years there has been an increase of almost 3 thousand kilometers considering all paved Brazilian roads. Currently this number exceeds 200 million kilometers, which still seems insufficient to meet the demands in different areas of Brazil.

Road quality is also an issue. In the 22nd CNT Survey of Highways, it was revealed that around 57% of the analyzed Brazilian roads are in an unsatisfactory situation, being classified as regular, bad or terrible.

According to the Brazilian Association of Truck Drivers, road transport represents 61% of cargo transport in Brazil. There are more than 147 cargo transport companies, 332 cooperatives and 492 regularized self-employed drivers to fulfill all freight charges.

Despite the availability of vehicles, the cost of freight is extremely expensive in Brazil. This value is up to 55% higher than other countries, due to taxes, road quality and other factors.

For comparison purposes, percentages of road transport in other continental countries:

  • US: 43%
  • China: 35%
  • Australia: 27%
  • Canada: 19%

In 2019, Brazil moved 61% of its cargo through highways, considering the TKUs (useful ton-kilometer) handled. In the same period, 21% of cargo was transported by rail, 12% by cabotage, 4% by pipeline, 2% by waterway and less than 1% by air.
