Casa dos Ventos and Comerc Entered into a New Partnership to Develop Green Hydrogen Projects Focused on the Northeast Region

The renewable energy company Casa dos Ventos and the Comerc group have established a partnership to develop green hydrogen projects in Brazil, a product that is now seen as one of the main players in reducing carbon emissions in the coming years. Comerc joined the partnership with Casa dos Ventos through its company Nexway, where President Marcel Haratz states they have been looking for interested parties in green hydrogen projects that would require around US$ 4 billion over the next ten years.

Agreement Comes After Comerc Announces Sale of 50% Capital

Green hydrogen is produced in an electrolyzer that uses clean energy, making it a strong fuel in combating climate change. In addition to being used in some vehicles, in the future, there is also the use of hydrogen in the food industry and several others.

Casa dos Ventos and Comerc can invest in their own projects and also develop units to sell to interested investors, in a model similar to what Casa dos Ventos currently uses in its renewable energy projects.

According to Haratz, it was decided to invest in and develop green hydrogen projects for consumption in the country and for export to markets abroad. The company’s president stated he will make a presentation on the subject at COP26.

The partnership between Casa dos Ventos and the trader is announced almost a month after the announcement of an agreement for the sale of half of Comerc’s capital to distributor Vibra, which in turn has been seeking to reposition itself in light of the transition to a low-emission economy.

Companies’ Agreement Will Focus on the Northeast

Haratz did not disclose the location and investment of the projects with Casa dos Ventos but stated that the Northeast region is expected to host the units due to its potential for solar and wind energy generation.

The region is also closer to Europe, a great market for the product. The president stated that it is likely that the green hydrogen unit will be the first to operate at a medium scale effectively in Brazil.

The economic viability of green hydrogen units has increased following a drop in renewable energy costs. Haratz stated that the use of green hydrogen is becoming viable and that since 70% of the cost of producing the fuel is electricity, the country has an essential role in this.

Casa dos Ventos Plans to Have 12GW in Wind Energy and 8GW in Solar

According to Lucas Araripe, Director of New Business at Casa dos Ventos, there is currently no discussion about certification and technology, but as has been done in other wind projects, it is necessary to believe in development.

Currently, the company has 1.5 GW in wind energy, among operating and under-construction projects, and plans to double that by 2026. In the future, the company plans to have 12 GW in wind energy and 8GW in solar energy.

Executives stated that the companies are preparing to participate in a green hydrogen auction that the German government is expected to hold in the coming months.
