Tracker 2021/2022 with 82,000 km Experiences Brake Failure; Dealer Links Issue to Oil-Soaked Timing Belt and Charges R$ 10,131.

An owner of a 2021/2022 Chevrolet Tracker with just 82,000 kilometers reported that the SUV’s braking system stopped functioning normally and that, after taking the vehicle to a dealership, he was informed that the problem was related to the oil-soaked timing belt. According to a complaint filed in Aracaju, Sergipe, in January 2026, the repair estimate reached R$ 10,131, a price that surprised the consumer because the belt was still far from the 240,000 kilometers recommended by Chevrolet for its scheduled replacement.

The case requires an important distinction. The owner claims he conducted all maintenance at authorized centers up to 60,000 kilometers, but stopped afterwards because he believed the car’s standard warranty had expired.

Chevrolet responded that there is a special coverage of up to 240,000 kilometers or 15 years for the timing belt, but it is contingent on performing preventive maintenance every 10,000 kilometers or 12 months at authorized centers. Since the manufacturer considered that this requirement was not met, they refused to provide service at no cost. The company also indicated that there were no outstanding field actions for that vehicle.

Tracker Had Service Up to 60,000 Kilometers

The owner, identified as Gilvan in the public complaint, stated that he purchased a 2021/2022 Tracker.

According to him, maintenance was performed primarily within the Chevrolet network during much of the vehicle’s usage.

Service at the dealership was maintained until the 60,000-kilometer mark. After this point, the owner decided to explore other maintenance options because he believed the standard warranty period for the SUV had concluded.

This decision would prove crucial when the problem emerged.

Not because a service outside the dealership indicates that the belt was damaged, but because Chevrolet uses the maintenance history as one of the conditions to grant the specialized coverage for the component.

Problem Occurred When Odometer Read Only 82,000 Kilometers

The discrepancy between the vehicle’s mileage and the official interval set for the belt makes this incident particularly striking.

According to Gilvan, the Tracker had only 82,000 kilometers when the failure occurred.

In the description published on Reclame Aqui, he directly states that “the brake simply stopped working”.

After this, he took the SUV to a Chevrolet dealership to diagnose the problem.

It was there, according to the consumer, that he received the diagnosis placing the oil-soaked timing belt at the center of the discussion.

The complaint does not provide a detailed technical report that allows for the public reconstruction of all affected components or precisely determine the mechanism of the failure.

Therefore, the relationship between the brake problem and the belt should be presented as diagnosis informed to the owner by the dealership, rather than as an independent technical conclusion from this report.

Dealership allegedly linked failure to oil-soaked timing belt

According to the report, the dealership indicated that the problem was with the oil-soaked timing belt.

This component is part of the system responsible for keeping the functioning of essential internal engine parts synchronized.

In Chevrolet’s latest three-cylinder engines, the belt works in direct contact with the lubricating oil, rather than remaining dry and isolated as in conventional systems.

Chevrolet itself explains that it adopted the technology to achieve lower noise, reduced vibration, efficiency, and durability. The manufacturer states that the belt was developed according to its specifications and operates with the engine’s lubricant.

It is this integration into the oil circuit that makes adherence to the lubricant specifications particularly significant.

Estimate presented to owner reached R$ 10,131

After the diagnosis came the number that changed the scope of the issue. The dealership presented an estimate of R$ 10,131 for the repair, according to the complaint.

The owner deemed the amount incompatible with what he expected from a vehicle with 82,000 kilometers and from a component whose replacement interval specified by Chevrolet is considerably higher.

The publication does not provide a complete list of the parts, services, and labor hours included in that R$ 10,131.

Chevrolet itself highlighted in its response that its dealerships are independent businesses and that diagnostic prices, parts, and labor can vary between stores and regions.

Manual calls for belt replacement only at 240,000 kilometers or 15 years

The official schedule helps to understand the owner’s reaction. In the maintenance plan for this generation of Tracker, Chevrolet specifies the replacement of the timing belt and tensioner at 240,000 kilometers or 15 years, whichever comes first.

The oil pump belt has the same interval.

Meanwhile, the accessory belt is different and is scheduled for replacement at 120,000 kilometers or five years.

This means that at 82,000 kilometers, the reported Tracker had covered just over one-third of the mileage established for the scheduled timing belt replacement.

Owner left the authorized network after 60,000 kilometers

Gilvan stated that he had completed all revisions at the dealership until he reached 60,000 kilometers. After that, he stopped performing revisions within the network as he believed the vehicle’s warranty had expired.

When he requested coverage for the issue at 82,000 kilometers, Chevrolet reviewed the history and replied that the maintenance plan required for the special coverage of the belt had not been fulfilled.

According to the manufacturer, maintenance should have occurred rigorously every 10,000 kilometers or 12 months at a Chevrolet dealership to maintain that specific coverage.

The company used this point to justify the denial of free repair. The response highlights an important distinction between two pieces of information that might seem similar but are not.

One aspect is the technical interval set for changing the timing belt. Another is the contractual condition required by the manufacturer for certain warranty coverage.

Owner questioned campaign offering special condition for Onix

Gilvan stated he had seen advertising related to a special condition involving vehicles with oil-soaked timing belts and questioned the dealership because he believed he could utilize the benefit.

According to him, there was an offer published with a repair cost much lower than the estimate of R$ 10,131 he received.

However, when he sought assistance, he was informed that the promotional action mentioned was directed towards the Onix and Onix Plus, not the Tracker.

Chevrolet confirmed this difference in its official response to the consumer.

The company explicitly stated that the cited action was only valid for the Onix and Onix Plus models and that there was no extension of that specific program for the Tracker.

It was this difference that led the owner to accuse the company of false advertising, a characterization he made that was not acknowledged by the automaker.

Tracker still has a forecast of 240,000 kilometers for the component

The fact that a particular promotional action does not include the Tracker does not mean that the SUV has a shorter maintenance interval for its timing belt.

The manual for the generation clearly states the figure: 240,000 kilometers or 15 years for the timing belt and tensioner.

Chevrolet also includes the Tracker among the models that use its modern three-cylinder engines with the oil-soaked solution and maintains, in its current communications, 240,000 kilometers as the replacement reference for the component.

In Gilvan’s specific case, the discussion did not occur because the vehicle had reached the normal replacement time.

The conflict was actually the opposite: the reported problem arose at 82,000 kilometers, well before the scheduled replacement, while the manufacturer considered that the maintenance history did not meet the necessary conditions to cover the service for free.

Assistance System Explains Why Changes Can Make Pedal Heavier

The Tracker’s own manual helps clarify an important point regarding the description of a “brake that stopped functioning.”

The vehicle utilizes brake assistance, and the brake booster reduces the effort needed for the driver to press the pedal.

The manual explains that when this assistance ceases to operate, braking remains possible, but it requires significantly more force on the pedal.

Therefore, reports of an extremely hard pedal need to be technically distinguished from a complete loss of all braking means.

In Gilvan’s case, the available source records his statement that the brake “simply stopped working.”

Chevrolet Claimed No Recall or Pending Field Action for the Car

In a response published on January 14, 2026, Chevrolet also stated that there was no pending field action for that Tracker.

This means that the company did not treat the case of the owner as part of an open specific recall for free repairs of that vehicle.

The manufacturer reiterated that any repairs would depend on budgeting and evaluation at an authorized network. The complaint ended up classified in the platform as unresolved, with a zero rating given by the consumer to the service.

Gilvan stated that he would not do business with the brand again.

This represents his individual assessment of the case and does not conclude technically on the entire Tracker fleet.

Problem at 82,000 Kilometers Turns Maintenance into Five-Digit Bill

The case of the Tracker from Aracaju brings together the elements that most concern modern vehicle owners.

The SUV had 82,000 kilometers, the owner claimed to have had servicing done at dealerships up to 60,000, the involved component has a scheduled replacement only at 240,000 kilometers, and the final estimate reached R$ 10,131 (about US$1,800).

Chevrolet, on the other hand, did not acknowledge the right to free repair because it considered that the necessary conditions for differentiated coverage of the timing belt had not been maintained after the vehicle left the authorized network. The manufacturer also stated that no field action was pending for the Tracker.

In Gilvan’s case, a part designed to last for a much greater mileage became the center of a mechanical and contractual discussion when the car had only 82,000 kilometers.

And what started as an unexpected brake failure ended with a number hard to ignore: R$ 10,131 (about US$1,800) to get the SUV back in order, according to the estimate reported by the owner.
