Dutch Company Released A Video Showing Its New Offshore Solar Energy Platform. The Idea Is To Generate Energy In Places Where The Wind Is Not Strong

The world is focused on seeking clean and more efficient, cheap energies that can be used across most of the planet with few limitations. With this in mind, a new project is being developed in the Netherlands and promises to revolutionize the offshore solar energy market.

It is a floating platform that will be towed out to sea to maximize sunlight for clean energy generation. Named “Demonstrator” by the company SolarDuck, the platform was moved upstream in the Netherlands to simulate open sea stress. See image below.

The project is designed to be used in cities and islands near the Equator, where there is not enough wind for wind energy production. Because of this, the project is being developed to withstand hurricane-force winds. The offshore solar energy platform is also expected to withstand waves of up to 3 meters.

Many Cities Lack Sufficient Space For Solar Energy Parks

The world is focused on using less non-renewable energy, and for this reason, solar energy is fundamental for the energy transition of various cities around the world. However, some metropolises lack sufficient land space for the production of this clean and essential energy. “Cities like Hong Kong, Singapore, and other islands are landlocked,” said SolarDuck

Some cities have space to produce wind energy; however, they do not have enough wind. Moreover, using buildings and houses for solar panel installation may not be feasible on a large scale. Another important reason companies prefer solar energy over wind energy is that it is much cheaper to produce solar energy.

Energy Platform Will Be 13 Times Larger

Based on its offshore past, the company now intends to build a solar energy platform 13 times larger than the current one.

The CEO of SolarDuck, Koen Burgers, spoke on the subject: “Our company is a spin-off from the research department of Damen Shipyards Group in the Netherlands, a company that uses the best industry practices to design a reliable solution capable of handling the hostile maritime environment.”

However, a concern for the company is with water movement, where it is essential to avoid any type of contact between water and electrical equipment. The floating offshore platform should be built in a triangular shape, as this is the most advised shape to withstand the elements and be more efficient.
