EDGE intends to incorporate three decades of Brazilian aerospace engineering, expand military projects, and develop equipment for national and foreign clients
EDGE Group has closed a deal to acquire 100% of the Brazilian company Akaer, a company specialized in aerospace engineering and defense technologies.
The completion of the transaction, however, still depends on regulatory approvals. The companies also did not disclose the negotiated amount.
The acquisition will allow EDGE to incorporate a Brazilian industrial structure with approximately three decades of experience in aerospace and military projects.

Agreement places Brazilian engineering at the center of EDGE’s strategy
Akaer was founded in 1992 and maintains its headquarters in São José dos Campos, in the interior of São Paulo.
The company has been participating since then in strategic programs of the Brazilian Armed Forces. It also develops technologies for the aerospace and defense markets.
The company’s portfolio includes important projects for the national industry:
- F-39 Gripen fighter jet, one of Brazil’s main strategic aerospace programs;
- KC-390 Millennium military freighter, developed for transport and support missions;
- EE-9 Cascavel armored vehicle, modernized to meet the needs of the Brazilian Army;
- Mechanized cavalry vehicles, included in another Army upgrade project.
The company also accumulated debts with employees and suppliers. This scenario, in turn, made the operation more costly.
Akaer participates in projects related to the F-39 Gripen, KC-390 Millennium, and the modernization of the EE-9 Cascavel.

Partnership between the companies began before acquisition
Akaer and EDGE signed a memorandum of understanding in 2023 to jointly develop advanced equipment.
The partnership later advanced to the development and industrialization of unmanned aerial systems.
A large part of the Brazilian company’s commercial revenues was already related to cooperation with the Arab conglomerate.
The JENIAH is among the equipment developed in this partnership. The large unmanned aircraft was designed by EDGE.
Akaer is involved in the development of structural components, internal parts, engines, cables, and different systems used in the aircraft.
Acquisition involves projects from concept to manufacturing
The conglomerate intends to use the Brazilian structure in all stages of new product development.
Akaer will be able to work, in this way, from the conception of the equipment to the engineering, industrialization, and manufacturing processes.
The company is expected to continue serving the Brazilian Armed Forces. The operation may also incorporate foreign clients in the future.
The classification of Strategic Defense Company was granted to Akaer by the Ministry of Defense.
EDGE states that this classification will be preserved with a participation compatible with the requirements applicable to the category.
The acquisition is still subject to regulatory approvals, while the value of the agreement has not been disclosed.
EDGE brings together Brazilian companies from different military areas
The conglomerate already owns 50% of SIATT, a company specialized in the development of smart weapon systems.
The group also controls Condor, a Brazilian manufacturer of non-lethal equipment.
SIATT is involved in the development of the MANSUP, an anti-ship missile intended for Brazilian Navy ships.
The equipment will be used later by the Tamandaré-class frigates.
The combination of these competencies will allow the development of integrated military solutions. The conglomerate also aims to reduce production cycles and make cost calculation more efficient.
Created in 2019, EDGE brings together companies from military platforms, missiles, autonomous systems, intelligence, security, space, and advanced technologies.
The group expands its presence in Latin America through acquisitions, partnerships, and agreements aimed at the regional scientific and technological base.
In your opinion, can the acquisition of Akaer by a foreign conglomerate strengthen the Brazilian defense industry or increase concern about national strategic technologies?
