Gerdau - natural gas - steel

In 2005, Gerdau Açominas became the first company in Minas Gerais to use compressed natural gas in its production line.

On December 03, Gerdau's board of directors approved the call for an extraordinary general meeting (AGE) to be held on December 18, in which shareholders will consider changing the company's corporate purpose to include "activities related to the sale and import of natural gas and other related activities”.

Article 2 of Gerdau's Bylaws establishes that the company acts only on two fronts: a) participation in the capital of companies with activities in the industry and trade of steel and/or metallurgical products; and b) exploration of the industry and trade of steel products in general.

Gerdau wants to change this article in order to also include the import and sale of natural gas. If the shareholders approve, the company would no longer acquire natural gas only for its own consumption, in its plants, and could, at the limit, sell it to the market.

The expansion of Gerdau's corporate purpose was discussed by the board of directors, which approved the submission of the proposal to the shareholders' meeting.

Gerdau trajectory in the use of natural gas

Gerdau already has a long history of using natural gas in its plants. In 2005, for example, Gerdau Açominas became the first company in Minas Gerais to use compressed natural gas in its production line.

In addition, three months ago, three of the company's units were authorized by the Ministry of Mines and Energy to import natural gas from Bolívia. Gerdau Aços Longos received approval to purchase 169 cubic meters of fuel per day. Gerdau Aços Especiais, 140 thousand cubic meters/day; and Gerdau Açominas, another 210 cubic meters per day.
