Embrapii Invests R$ 792 Million in 411 Clean Technology Projects for Decarbonization. Data Shared at the ANPEI Conference, One of the Largest R&D Events in the Country.

Embrapii allocated a significant sum of R$ 792 million to promote innovative projects aimed at energy transition and decarbonization. These investments were detailed at the ANPEI Conference, standing out as one of the largest R&D gatherings in Brazil. In total, there are 411 clean technology projects supported by Embrapii. The Brazilian Company for Research and Innovation has focused on these endeavors to drive sustainable solutions. The energy transition is essential for the country’s future, and these efforts are crucial to achieving a positive impact on the environment.

ANPEI Conference and Embrapii’s Impact

Data was shared in a panel at the ANPEI Conference, one of the largest research and development events in Brazil. São Paulo, August 22, 2024 – Embrapii (Brazilian Company for Research and Innovation) has already channeled around R$ 800 million into 411 initiatives focused on energy transition and decarbonization. Igor Manhães Nazareth, Director of Innovation and Institutional Relations at Embrapii, presented these numbers on August 21 during the ‘Structuring Projects – Energy Transition’ panel, an essential part of the ANPEI Conference, which ends today in São Paulo.

Sustainable Partnerships and Initiatives of Embrapii

So far, 69 Embrapii Units have partnered with 379 companies aiming for decarbonization and energy transition. In the panel, Nazareth shared the stage with André Ferrarese from Tupy, and David Noronha from Energy Source. Tupy, a Brazilian multinational in metallurgy, collaborates with Embrapii on projects related to lithium-ion battery recycling, highlighting the commitment to integrate energy transition in Brazil.

Subsequently, a Cooperation Agreement was established with two philanthropic organizations, Agni and Instituto Arapyaú, reinforcing the pioneering and sustainability of Embrapii in bioeconomy. ‘The partnership with Agni and Arapyaú will enhance Embrapii’s contributions in the field of bioeconomy, uniting efforts to overcome technological challenges in favor of sustainability’, emphasized Nazareth.

Projects Displayed at Embrapii’s Booth

At Embrapii’s booth, several innovative projects aimed at solving complex problems were presented. Among them, the Soft Robot, a creation of the Embrapii Senai Cimatec Unit, which received R$ 54.4 million (with R$ 7 million from Embrapii). This technological robot inspects hard-to-reach areas on offshore platforms, reducing the risk of work-related accidents.

Another highlight is the SUBOT, an autonomous robotic system created for inspecting high-voltage electrical equipment, which obtained an investment of R$ 6.5 million (R$ 1.6 million from Embrapii). The Extracelular Matriz (ECM) project, in the health sector, uses 3D printing with bioprint, increasing the preservation of products and contributing to the filling of wrinkles and other aesthetic applications.

Promising Technological Innovations

The Rota Cilia project developed a technology for reading damages in vehicles, automating the analysis of damage through AI learning. This solution is widely adopted by insurance companies and other automotive businesses. In the aesthetic field, the ‘Smart Lipstick’, a result of a collaboration between Grupo Boticário and Embrapii, promises to revolutionize lipstick application by using AI to detect different skin tones.

Another innovative project aims for carbon offsetting through the rapid pyrolysis of lignocellulosic residues, transforming them into bioproducts. Marcelo Moreira from the Federal University of Viçosa explains that this technology converts waste into products such as bio-oil and biochar, standing out in the valorization of forest and industrial waste.

Advancements in Agriculture and Future Contributions

Rota Zasso, in partnership with the Embrapii ISI Sensoriamento Unit, uses computer vision to remove weeds, optimizing agricultural management sustainably. Vitor Nardelli from ISI Sensoriamento highlights the efficiency of robotic vehicles in cultivating and monitoring crops.

The exhibition of projects at the ANPEI Conference aims to showcase the potential to transform concepts into viable products. ‘Embrapii invests, shares knowledge, and accelerates development until market entry,’ noted Marcelo Prim, Operations Director at Embrapii.

Participation and Support for Sustainable Development

At the conference opening, Minister Luciana Santos and other important representatives from the scientific and technological sector participated. The minister highlighted the challenges and opportunities in Brazil, which ranks 13th in the world in scientific production, emphasizing the need to advance innovation to foster a model of sustainable development based on science and technology.

The ANPEI Conference, concluded at the WTC Events Center in São Paulo, reinforces Embrapii’s commitment to supporting innovations that promote sustainability and technological development in Brazil. With over 400 projects and collaborations with hundreds of companies, Embrapii continues to be a pillar in research and innovation, shaping a more sustainable and technological future for the country.
