The Rail Terminal of Klabin in the State of Paraná Can Drain 125 Thousand Tons of Paper and Pulp in Containers Per Month
On September 15th, Wednesday, Klabin inaugurated a container rail terminal next to one of its factories, Puma, in Ortigueira, in the Campos Gerais region of the state of Paraná. The shipping pavilion is connected by rail to the Port of Paranaguá, from where the paper and pulp manufacturer exports a large part of its production, in a project described by the company as “the largest in transportation capacity by volume for a single company in the world.” See: Klabin Announces It Will Invest R$ 342 Million in Projects in the States of Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Santa Catarina, and Others

Details of Klabin’s Rail Terminal in Paraná
The rail terminal can drain 125 thousand tons of paper and pulp in containers per month. This volume comes from Klabin’s production at the Puma units (which is undergoing a billion-dollar expansion) in Ortigueira and Monte Alegre in Telêmaco Borba. The investment in this modality was R$ 300 million.
The terminal, the movement, and the boarding of the cargo will be operated by the company TCP, which also manages the Paranaguá Container Terminal. According to them, Klabin’s yard has the capacity to store 2 thousand containers, specialized equipment for moving the units, and three internal railway lines with capacity for up to 90 wagons each.

Rail Terminal Project
Moreover, its distribution potential via rail reduces traffic on highways, increases Klabin’s operational efficiency in Paraná, and contributes to sustainability by reducing CO2 emissions.
The project was designed based on the branch built at the Puma Unit inaugurated in 2016 and until then the largest private investment in Paraná’s history, totaling R$ 8.5 billion, which doubled Klabin’s production capacity in three years. In 2021, with a new investment of R$ 12.9 billion in the Puma II Project, the Company is acquiring four more locomotives and 460 wagons to transport the additional volume generated by the new factory. To put them into operation, the branch underwent an expansion, the construction of a trench on PR-340, linking Telêmaco Borba to Ortigueira, including, in addition to the rail transport of pulp, the transport of paper.

In a relevant fact disclosed on 08/30, Klabin began operations of the first phase of the Puma II project at the industrial unit in the city of Ortigueira, in the state of Paraná. The first phase of the project included the construction of a main fiber line for the production of unbleached pulp integrated with a kraftliner and white top liner paper machine with a capacity of 450 thousand tons annually.
Alongside the operation start of MP27, the construction works for the second paper machine of the Puma II Project in Paraná, which is scheduled to start up in 2023, have already begun and follow all safety and hygiene protocols required during this period. MP28 will focus on the production of paperboard, with a production capacity of 460 thousand tons annually, consolidating Klabin as a global producer of paperboard.
The decision for the paperboard machine was announced in May of this year and considers a thorough evaluation of trends, opportunities, and market conditions. “The sector is in a prosperous moment, and we believe it will remain strong in the coming years, driven by the pursuit of greater sustainability. The paperboard offers good possibilities for our business, which is integrated, diversified, and flexible. It also allows association with barriers, which are growing strongly as an alternative to single-use plastic packaging,” says Flávio Deganutti, Klabin’s Paper Director.
