Macaé will receive its first biogas plant, with capacity to produce 1 megawatt. The gas will be generated through the treatment of waste at the Waste Treatment Center

This Tuesday (28) Macaé won its first biogas plant, which will operate at the Waste Treatment Center (CTR). The opening took place at 10 am.

Biogas plant in Macaé will have a capacity of 1 MW

According to Juninho Luna, Secretary of Environment, Sustainability and Animal Protection, the start of operations of the biogas plant will take place after the testing phase, and reveals that the plant's electricity will be generated through waste from the Waste Treatment Center .

According to Luna, the 30 biogas wells built around the CTR will have the capacity to generate up to 1 megawatt (MW) of clean energy in this first phase, managing to supply around 4 thousand homes, in addition to avoiding the emission of tons of methane gas into the atmosphere, bringing an important positive impact to the environment of Macaé.

The manager also pointed out that this biogas plant represents a sustainability solution, considering that the electricity generated by the project will be clean and renewable energy, less aggressive to people and the environment.

Luna adds that garbage will always exist, increasing the production of polluting gases such as methane, an agent that is aggressive to the environment. With this action, the municipality is properly allocating methane gas, generating several benefits to health and the environment.

Transforming waste into energy

For some time now, the transformation of garbage into biogas has gained increasing popularity and, in addition to Macaé, the companies Aggreko and Eva Energia have entered into a partnership for a biogas plant, with energy generated through landfills.

The first unit was installed in Seropédica, in Rio de Janeiro, and the second was installed in Mauá (SP). It is important to emphasize the importance of these initiatives, bearing in mind that, despite the implementation of public policies to control and encourage garbage collection and the correct disposal of urban solid waste, part of the garbage collected in cities is disposed of inappropriately, which proves that the Brazil has immense potential to generate a greater amount of energy from these urban wastes.

In 2014, around 200 thousand tons of MSW were generated per day in Brazil, equivalent to around 78 million tons per year. According to the data, the South and Southeast regions have a higher percentage of waste deposited in landfills compared to other regions.

Federal Government launches measures to encourage biomethane production

In order to advance the sustainability agenda, the Federal Government launched last Monday (20) several measures to encourage the production of biomethane through waste treatment.

The information came from Minister of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, who was interviewed last Sunday on the Programa Brasil em Pauta. According to the Minister, several initiatives by the Federal Government are already being carried out so that the treatment of waste is carried out and transformed into biomethane, mainly waste from poultry and pigs, sugar cane and others that do not come from landfills.

Processing this waste reduces the amount of methane gas generated by this type of waste.
