Honda Announced Yesterday (17) Plans to Build a Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Powered Generator at Its Corporate Campus in Torrance, California, by the Beginning of 2023, to Power Its Data Centers

The hydrogen-powered generator from multinational Honda will serve as a proof of concept for the future commercialization of a power generation unit, to be used as a zero-emission backup power source for facilities like data centers, which require reliable and clean auxiliary power generation to continue operations even in emergency situations. This new initiative will leverage Honda’s fuel cell technology expertise as part of the company’s global goal to achieve carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities by 2050.

Honda’s Hydrogen Generator Was Built from the Fuel Cells of the Clarity Fuel Cell Model

Using hydrogen fuel cell components from Honda Clarity Fuel Cell vehicles, Honda has developed a stationary fuel cell power station capable of providing backup power. The proof of concept for the FC plant will begin testing at American Honda’s corporate campus in Torrance, California, in early 2023.

The fuel cell power station will use hydrogen fuel cell components from Honda Clarity Fuel Cell vehicles in a flexible parallel stationary power generation system of four quadruplets, capable of generating up to 1152 kW-DC/1 MW-AC from an inverter. The unique advantage of the design is the flexibility to alter the layout of the four individual fuel cell units to fit the installation environment, accommodating a cuboid, L shape, Z shape, or other packaging requirements.

“We will leverage the experience that Honda has established in creating multiple generations of fuel cell systems for the development of a hydrogen fuel cell power generator,” said Mitsuru Kariya, senior vice president responsible for the R&D Business Unit at American Honda.

Honda’s Commitment to the Environment

Honda is committed to addressing global environmental and energy issues, striving to achieve carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities by 2050. Honda proudly has the highest average fuel economy of any full-line automaker in the United States, along with the lowest CO2 emissions, according to the latest data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

To further reduce CO2 emissions, the Honda will strive for battery electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cells to represent 100% of vehicle sales in the U.S. and globally by 2040.

Data Center Powered by Renewable Energy

The hydrogen fuel cell generators that Honda designed aim to replace the previous ones that relied on diesel, which results in higher carbon emissions and local atmospheric pollutants. Data centers utilizing hydrogen fuel cells offer a promising future for cleaner, more reliable, and high-quality energy generation, especially when operating with so-called “green” hydrogen, made from renewable sources, with water vapor as the only emission.

Data centers, in particular, require reliable and high-quality power, where any interruption in the power supply can lead to downtime or issues such as data corruption and damage to servers.
