An SUV born for a central market in electrification begins to appear closer to the Brazilian consumer, at a time of technological change and fierce competition between traditional brands and Chinese manufacturers.

The Nissan NX8 has started to be sold in China and has entered the radar of the Brazilian market after appearing in tests in the country.

Developed by the joint venture Dongfeng Nissan, the SUV arrives in the Chinese market with fully electric versions and with range extender, in a move that expands the Japanese brand’s presence in the family-sized electrified SUV segment.

With 4.87 meters in length and 2.917 meters in wheelbase, the model is positioned in a range that concentrates a significant part of the competition among medium and large SUVs in the Chinese market.

The launch also marks a new stage in Nissan’s strategy in the Asian country, with a product developed to meet local demands for high range, fast charging, and greater technological content.

Price of the Nissan NX8 in China and market positioning

In China, the NX8 was launched with prices ranging from 159,900 to 209,900 yuan.

In direct conversion, the entry price is close to R$ 120,000.

For Chinese standards, this price range puts the utility vehicle in direct competition with electrified models from local brands that have grown in recent years with high-volume offerings and more competitive prices.

Reports released during the launch coverage indicate that the model registered thousands of orders shortly after sales began.

This data has been treated by specialized outlets as an indication that Nissan is trying to regain space in an environment increasingly pressured by the expansion of Chinese manufacturers.

Electric versions and EREV system of the Nissan NX8

The NX8 arrived in the market with 100% electric versions and EREV versions, an acronym used for electric vehicles with range extenders.

In the electric configurations, the SUV uses 73 kWh and 81 kWh batteries and offers range of up to 650 km in the Chinese CLTC cycle, in addition to 800 V architecture in the higher versions.

In the configuration with range extender, the setup combines electric traction with a 1.5 turbo engine used to generate energy and recharge the battery.

In this arrangement, the combustion engine does not directly move the wheels.

The proposal is to maintain predominantly electric driving, with support from the generator in situations requiring greater range.

Data released at the commercial launch indicates electric range of up to 310 km in the CLTC cycle for the more complete versions with range extender.

In combined use, the total range can reach 1,450 km.

In previous information, still in the pre-launch phase, smaller numbers for electric-only range appeared.

With the official debut, the most recent data has become up to 310 km.

Nissan NX8 in Brazil: tests and launch scenario

In Brazil, the NX8 has been spotted in tests, including in the Campinas region, in the interior of São Paulo.

So far, Nissan has not officially confirmed the arrival of the model in the national market nor disclosed a schedule, versions, or price range for a potential launch.

Still, the appearance of the SUV on Brazilian roads indicates that the vehicle is at least under local evaluation.

This type of procedure is usually part of technical and commercial studies conducted before a decision on importation or launch, although it does not represent confirmation of sale.

Range extender gains space in the automotive market

The EREV configuration has begun to receive more attention in markets where charging infrastructure is still expanding.

In this system, the vehicle maintains the driving characteristics of an electric vehicle but reduces exclusive dependence on charging points by having a combustion engine aimed at energy generation.

In the Brazilian case, the discussion about this type of setup has advanced with the arrival of models that bet on this solution as an alternative between conventional hybrids and pure electric vehicles.

The NX8 enters this scenario as another example of a vehicle developed to offer greater range without giving up electric traction as the basis of its operation.

Nissan’s strategy in China and impact on the sector

More than the range numbers, the launch of the NX8 helps to show how Nissan is trying to reposition its operations in China.

The model combines generous dimensions, two electrification options, and a price range aligned with the competitive standard that has come to prevail in the local market.

In recent years, Chinese automakers have increased their market share precisely by combining technological content, faster charging, and lower prices.

Nissan’s response, in this case, came through a project aimed at this reality, rather than an adaptation of already known global products.

Brazilian market watches the next moves

For the Brazilian public, the concrete fact so far is the circulation of test units.

The existence of the version with range extender is also confirmed, a technology that has begun to be observed with more attention in countries where full electrification is still advancing unevenly.

Without an official announcement, there is no confirmation about which versions could be offered in Brazil, nor about the possibility of the model arriving with the same technical setup presented in China.

What is already known is that the NX8 has become part of the list of vehicles monitored by a market that seeks electrification alternatives adapted to different usage profiles.
