A future truck drivers' strike is coming soon with the new strike on February 01st

This Tuesday (5), entities representing truck drivers decided to carry out a general strike for the entire category, throughout the Brazilian territory, the strike will take place on the first day of February. This strike decision was taken at the Extraordinary General Meeting of the CNTRC (Conselho Nacional de Transporte Rodoviário). The year 2019 was also the scene of a strike, where the main flag was freight and diesel, where the government tried to avoid this stoppage. There was also the announcement of a Petrobras Truck Driver Card, which would freeze the price of diesel for 90 days, for drivers who bought it in advance.

The main exaction of drivers, through this new strike with the stoppage of the category, is against the absurd high in the value of fuel, which is considered abusive. Truck drivers also seek, among other guidelines, the establishment of a minimum freight floor for self-employed transporters, a special retirement, a regulatory framework for transport and a more active inspection by ANTT.

According to the Union of Autonomous Goods Transport of Feira de Santana and Region (Sintracam), the North is that, on the 1st of February, truck drivers stay in their homes. “On the highways, only buses and small cars will pass. Truck does not pass”, said the class representative.

The strike was approved at the end of 2020, which divides the category, and local unions say they will not join the truckers' strike.

Truck drivers' unions fear being held responsible for the strike, through the court's stoppage of truck drivers

Despite the mobilization being convened in 2020, the truck drivers' unions consulted by the political analysis company Arko Advice, who assess and consider that the movement will not have membership. They fear being held accountable in court for a truck driver stoppage in the middle of the pandemic.

“This is not the time for any stoppage, as the presidential decree that makes cargo transport an essential service is still in effect. Any stoppage of transport at that time could become a crime for those who promoted and joined the strike. We also understand that the strike has a political nature and not a benefit to the category”, argues Everaldo Bastos, President of the Autonomous Truck Drivers Union of Vale do Paraíba (SP).
