As a result, average prices at refineries will be R$2,84 per liter for gasoline and R$2,86 per liter for diesel, after applying readjustments of R$0,23 and R$0,15 per liter. , respectively. The information was confirmed by Petrobras.

Valid prices are the average of those practiced at Petrobras' 37 refineries, spread across the Southeast, North, Northeast and Midwest regions

According to Petrobras, the increase is due to “alignment of prices to the international market [which] is fundamental to guarantee that the Brazilian market continues to be supplied, without risk of shortages, by the different actors responsible for serving the Brazilian regions: distributors, importers and other refiners, in addition to Petrobras”. The company recalls that this same competitive balance was responsible for price reductions when supply grows in the international market, as occurred throughout 2020.

The company explained that "prices are based on import parity prices and, therefore, follow variations in the value of the product on the international market and in the dollar exchange rate, up and down".

Petrobras emphasizes that the new values refer to the sale of refineries to distributors, that is, they do not correspond to what will reach the final consumer. Until reaching the last buyer, there is the addition of federal and state taxes, costs for the acquisition and mandatory blending of biofuels and the gross margins of distributors and service stations.

Petrobras also claims that gasoline and diesel prices are below the world average.

“According to data from the Global Petrol Prices, on 18/01/2021, the average consumer price of gasoline in Brazil was the 56th cheapest among 166 surveyed, being 17,8% below the average of 1,05 dollars per liter. The average consumer diesel price in Brazil was the 42nd cheapest among 165 surveyed, being 26,7% below the average of 0,95 cents per liter”.
