Petrobras Produces 95,000 Tons of CAP Pro R at Revap After Incorporating Technical Corn Oil as a Renewable Raw Material in Asphalt Production.

Petrobras has produced 95,000 tons of asphalt with renewable content at the Henrique Lage Refinery (Revap) in São José dos Campos since it started using technical corn oil in the production of CAP Pro R. This new input was introduced into the process in June and enhances the use of renewable raw materials within the refinery focused on producing paving binders.

This change affects a product whose emissions are primarily related to its use during construction. As the petroleum asphalt is not intended for combustion, the carbon in the material remains incorporated after the pavement is applied throughout its lifespan.

Oil Used by Petrobras Originates During Corn Ethanol Production

Known by the acronym TCO, technical corn oil is obtained as a semi-refined residual product during the grain processing intended for ethanol production.

The supply currently used by the company comes from Inpasa. For Petrobras, the inclusion of this material in CAP Pro R broadens the diversity of inputs available for the refinery and creates another industrial application for a product derived from the agricultural chain.

Rafael Verruck, Director of Internal Market Trading, Oil, and DDGS at Inpasa, associates this use with the circular economy and the utilization of corn oil in a sector different from where the product is generated.

Asphalt Expands Application of a Raw Material Already Used in Fuels

The company began using TCO in other areas. The input was already part of processes aimed at producing SAF, sustainable aviation fuel, and Diesel R.

Its arrival in the paving sector increases the number of products into which the raw material can be incorporated.

Angélica Laureano, Director of Logistics, Marketing, and Markets at Petrobras, states that the company is working to diversify the renewable inputs used in its refineries and increase the supply of products associated with lower carbon intensity.

CAP Pro R is Part of a Line Focused on Road Infrastructure

CAP Pro R is part of the asphalt portfolio developed by Petrobras to meet road infrastructure projects, paying attention to pavement performance and the carbon footprint of the product over its life cycle.

The incorporation of technical corn oil occurs during manufacturing at Revap and integrates this strategy within an already established industrial-scale production.

The 95,000 tons produced since June demonstrate that the use of the new input has surpassed a phase limited to isolated tests. The refinery has begun employing the raw material in commercial volumes, inserting a product derived from corn processing into the chain of materials intended for paving.

Petrobras Expands Suppliers to Sustain Use of Renewable Inputs

The company is also working to expand the base capable of supplying raw materials with this profile. The availability of inputs becomes important as they reach different refining processes and move beyond isolated applications.

At Revap, this movement has already reached asphalt production. With TCO incorporated into CAP Pro R since June, Petrobras connects the corn ethanol chain to road infrastructure and amplifies the industrial use of a renewable raw material that was already present in other products in its portfolio.
