This Is What Senator Omar Aziz Announced This Week to Congress After Sources Indicate There Was Fraud in the Sale of a Petrobras Oil Refinery (PETR4.SA) to Mubadala Capital, Based in the United Arab Emirates.
The RLAM refinery in Bahia was sold to Mubadala’s Acelen unit in 2021 for US$ 1.8 billion, along with its logistics assets. The senator stated that his committee first formally requested from Petrobras, officially known as Petróleo Brasileiro SA, documentation regarding the agreement’s price for the refinery.
On Wednesday, the Brazilian Oil Workers’ Union, FUP, stated that it requested the Public Prosecutor’s Office to investigate any connection between the refinery sale and the alleged attempt by Bolsonaro to bring jewelry gifts worth US$ 3.2 million into the country in 2021, but did not do so. Officials confiscated jewelry found in a government aide’s backpack.
The gift from the king of Saudi Arabia to Bolsonaro and his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, did not come from the United Arab Emirates, but the unions pointed out the geographical proximity of the two countries, the former president said in a recent interview. The Institute of Oil, Gas and Biofuels Strategies (Ineep) estimated that the refinery is worth between US$ 3 billion and US$ 4 billion, about double the price for which it was sold, FUP added.

Petrobras and Shell Form Partnership in Energy Exploration and Transmission
Petrobras stated in a release on Thursday that Petrobras and Shell have signed a five-year agreement to seek opportunities in activities such as oil exploration and production in the pre-salt layer, as well as in energy transition. Through this partnership, the companies recognize the strategic importance of synergies in E&P projects, including decarbonization initiatives, in a low-carbon economy scenario, and reinforce the search for new partnership opportunities in Brazil and abroad.
In Light of Political Disputes, Government Again Alters Appointments of Petrobras Advisors
The federal government changed the name nominated for the Petrobras board amid a political dispute, generating more speculation about a possible delay in changing the state-owned company’s main executive. This occurred after the company replaced the nomination of Wagner Witter earlier this month with Bruno Moretti, the current special secretary for Government Analysis of the Presidency of the Republic.
