Instability advances through the South with extratropical cyclone, intensifies rains between Saturday and Sunday and drops temperatures, with forecast of more accentuated cold in the mountains and reduced maximums in Santa Catarina and Paraná during the last weekend of April.
The formation of an extratropical cyclone off the coast of Rio Grande do Sul is expected to change the weather in Southern Brazil between Saturday, April 25, and Sunday, April 26, with heavy rain, risk of storms, and a drop in temperatures.
According to Meteored, the system begins to organize between Friday night, April 24, and Saturday morning, associated with a cold front advancing through the region and increasing atmospheric instability.
Cyclone formation and weather change in the South
The extratropical cyclone develops from a low-pressure area linked to the cold front, a mechanism that favors the formation of heavy clouds and expands the conditions for persistent rain in part of the Southern Region.

On Saturday, the weather is already expected to be more overcast in Santa Catarina and southern Paraná, with a forecast of light and isolated rain in the Mid-West, Highlands, and southern coast of Santa Catarina.
Throughout the afternoon and evening, instability gains strength and spreads to the Greater West of Santa Catarina, as well as areas in western and southwestern Paraná, where rain may occur with moderate intensity.
Advance of rain and risk of storms on Sunday
On Sunday, April 26, the forecast indicates increased instability in Santa Catarina, with rain at different times of the day and the possibility of more intense downpours, especially in the Far West of the state.
In Paraná, rain is expected to begin in the morning in the western and southwestern regions, with moderate to heavy intensity, before advancing to other areas throughout the day.
The central Paraná region may also register storms during the night, while the combination of a cold front, humidity, and low pressure keeps the weather unstable in much of both states.
Temperature drop and more intense cold in the mountains
In addition to the rain, the cyclone and cold front are expected to cause a drop in temperatures, especially on Sunday, when minimums may approach 0°C in mountainous areas of the South.
During the afternoon, maximums are not expected to exceed 25°C in much of Santa Catarina and Paraná, with the exception of the far north of Paraná, where temperatures may still reach 30°C.
In central-southern Paraná, northern Santa Catarina, and the Santa Catarina Mountains, the forecast indicates colder afternoons, with maximums between 17°C and 18°C in some municipalities.
Capitals register smaller temperature variation
Florianópolis is expected to have a minimum of 20°C and a maximum of 23°C on Sunday, while Curitiba may register a minimum of 18°C and a maximum of 25°C, according to the forecast released by Meteored.
The weather change occurs on the last weekend of April and reinforces a typical pattern of transition to colder days, with the advance of frontal systems and greater thermal contrast in the Center-South of the country.
