It will be the first luxury sports car to use niobium, a chemical already present in jet engines, rockets, building structures, etc.
According to the article published yesterday by Sonia Racy, in the column Direto da Fonte, in Estadão, Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineração (CBMM), headquartered in Minas Gerais and a global leader in the manufacture of niobium products, has just entered into a partnership with the British BAC to develop the first luxury car that will have the mineral in the composition of its structure, with the intention of making it stronger, more resistant and lighter.

The British Briggs Automotive Company (BAC), specializing in high-performance luxury cars, is going to produce a monoposto (car for one person, like racing cars) with a structure made of niobium.
According to the company, it will be the first luxury sports car to use niobium, a chemical element already present in jet engines, rockets, building structures, etc.

“The partnership between the companies aims to provide even more efficiency to the new BAC Mono, since the use of metallic alloys enriched with niobium in the chassis will imply a reduction in the material necessary to achieve the structural objective of the vehicle”, informs Pablo Salazar , responsible for the Mobility area at CBMM.
BAC is the only manufacturer of monocars for use on the street in addition to the racetrack. In 2011, it launched the Mono, a super sports car that has already undergone updates. The next one, scheduled for 2021, will have niobium in its structure.
CBMM does not have data on sales figures for the Mono, which costs more than R$1 million, or whether it will be sold in Brazil. Today BAC exports 80% of its production to countries such as the United States, Hong Kong, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Sweden and Poland.
About CBMM
CBMM's history is closely linked to the development of niobium processing and applications. When the Company was founded in the 50s, there was neither the market nor the know-how to produce niobium. CBMM has developed the uses of niobium and created a market for it, through a program to develop niobium technology and promote its effectiveness, demonstrating the advantages that make niobium an unbeatable element in its main applications.
More recently, CBMM has invested in advanced manufacturing and management processes, resulting in improved performance and expansion of production capacity. The Company's success is the result of decades of investment and long-term strategic planning.
