Elon Musk announced, in May 2025, his withdrawal from politics after facing significant financial losses and frustrations with the administration of Donald Trump. The entrepreneur, who led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), declared that he has “done enough” and intends to focus on his companies, such as Tesla and SpaceX.
Musk’s Involvement with Trump Government and Creation of DOGE
In November 2024, Musk was appointed by Trump to co-lead the DOGE, with the mission of reducing federal spending and increasing government efficiency. Initially, Musk estimated that the department would save US$ 2 trillion, but later revised that projection to US$ 150 billion. The DOGE implemented significant cuts, including the layoff of 250,000 public employees and the closure of 11 federal agencies.
Criticisms of the “Big Beautiful Bill” and Disappointment with Fiscal Policies
In May 2025, Musk publicly criticized the tax bill promoted by Trump, known as the “Big Beautiful Bill.” He expressed disappointment with the rising budget deficit and stated that the legislation undermined the efforts of the DOGE. The law, which includes tax cuts and increased defense spending, was passed by the House of Representatives and awaits a vote in the Senate.

Negative Impact on Musk’s Companies and Decision to Step Away from Politics
Musk’s association with the Trump government, therefore, led to protests, boycotts, and vandalism against Tesla, particularly in several European countries. As a result, the company’s sales plummeted sharply, and in addition, the net profit for the first quarter of 2025 fell 71% compared to the previous year. In response, Musk announced that moving forward, he would drastically reduce his political donations and, furthermore, remain as CEO of Tesla. Finally, he also stated that despite the pressures, he would continue in the role for at least another five consecutive years.
Gradual Closure of DOGE and Focus on the Private Sector
After his departure from DOGE, Musk, therefore, indicated that the department should be shut down by July 4, 2026. This date, by the way, coincides with the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States, which reinforces the symbolism of his decision. Consequently, he intends to focus entirely on his own companies, including, above all, the development of the humanoid robot Optimus. Additionally, Musk also plans to expand the operations of SpaceX, seeking thereby new advances in space exploration. Despite ongoing controversies, he remains extremely influential in the technology and business sectors.
