According to Viga, only in the USA investments of US$ 400 billion have been announced for green hydrogen, solar, and wind energy. Americans have already seen that this new segment is extremely promising and wish to lead the world in this market.
The manager of Fortescue also warned that wind energy is coming to add and that the national government should stay alert and apply new investments to start taking the first steps in the production of green hydrogen in Brazil.
According to the executive, three years ago his company began to focus on green hydrogen and undertook a journey around the world regarding the potential resources for the production of the fuel. In this journey, the company found opportunities in 100 projects worldwide.
Fortescue has a positive outlook on the future of offshore and its energy potential. According to Viga last Thursday (20), during the panel of Brazil Windpower, Brazil has excellent conditions in terms of energy resources, with wind and solar energy sources priced competitively.
More Than 30 Countries, Including the USA, Have Already Announced Their Strategies for the Fuel of the Future
According to Natália Castilhos Rypl, an analyst at BloombergNEF, around 35 countries, including the USA, have already launched their strategies for hydrogen. In Latin America, Chile was the pioneer, given that the region has a significant potential with lower production costs.
In light of this scenario, Latin America, with a long-term overall demand, plans to export hydrogen to other countries like Europe and those that lack the capacity to produce and consume green hydrogen.
The Latin American countries are focusing on Europe as the main consumers. The analyst stated that, due to the need, some sectors will find it easier to adopt the fuel consumption, such as those using gray hydrogen, for substitution reasons. Among them are oil refining, ammonia production, and some sectors with high consumption potential such as steel and aluminum.
Natália highlights that offshore wind energy in Brazil is expected to grow about 10 times by 2035, and other countries will start to enter this market. By 2027, the USA is expected to be a critical market, becoming the third-largest offshore wind market in the world by 2035, behind the UK and China.
Green Hydrogen Projects in Brazil
In Brazil, some offshore wind farms are located near ports that are organizing Green Hydrogen projects. The aim is to combine the two technologies; however, four factors are necessary to generate hydrogen from offshore wind: natural resources, land availability, energy security, and proximity to hydrogen production with consumption.
According to Mauro Andrade, executive director of business development at Prumo Logística, the goal is to industrialize the Port of Açu with renewable energy and that agreements already exist for the development of small-scale hydrogen projects, with other partnerships also in the company’s focus.
