VLI's Leader Project aims to maximize the energy efficiency of its locomotives, promoting more economical fuel consumption and, at the same time, reducing CO2 emissions

VLI, a leading company in logistics solutions for railways, ports and terminals, is innovating the railway sector with its Project Leader. This promising project aims to not only optimize locomotive performance, but also significantly reduce CO2 emissions. By expanding its initiatives, the company is contributing to more efficient and sustainable rail transport.

Economical fuel consumption and energy efficiency of locomotives

VLI's Leader Project aims to maximize the energy efficiency of its locomotives, promoting more economical fuel consumption and, at the same time, reducing CO2 emissions. This initiative is part of the company's greater commitment to environmental responsibility and resource optimization. Locomotives equipped with this technology are operating in the Southeast, East and North Corridors, representing a significant milestone in the railway sector.

Implementation of the Leader project on more than 200 locomotives throughout Brazil

The Project Leader implementation schedule is ambitious, with the technology expected to be installed in 226 locomotives responsible for the main VLI flows. The expectation is that the fuel savings reach 7% in the East and Southeast Corridors, and 3,5% in the North Corridor by 2024. This advancement is possible thanks to the continuous improvement of technology and specific adaptations for VLI operations.

The technology behind Project Leader allows the driver to enable semi-autonomous driving when the train reaches a speed exceeding 8 km/hour. This results in a more efficient operation, with less consumption of fossil fuels.

Cesar Toniolo, general manager of Engineering, Development and Operational Technology at VLI, highlights the importance of Leader in the company's economic strategy. According to him, “This technology allows the identification of operational factors that enable it to drive more efficiently, reducing the consumption of fossil fuels.”

Technology improvements and adaptations and the importance of the driver in the project

The Leader Project stages involve continuous adaptations and improvements to ensure the effectiveness of the technology in reducing fuel use. The project is currently in the validation and adaptation phase to VLI's operational reality.

It is important to highlight that, despite advanced technology, the driver continues to be essential in the operation of the train. It is your responsibility to supervise the driving assistant and regain control when necessary. It is the key to ensuring the safety of the railway system, as well as the execution of operational stopping procedures or alerts during train circulation.

Fuel and material reduction

In addition to saving fuel, Project Leader also will contribute to reducing wear on rolling stock, which results in additional savings and greater operational efficiency. With the successful implementation of this project, VLI is leading the way towards more sustainable and efficient rail transport, whilst reinforcing its commitment to safety and the environment.

VLI's Leader Project represents a notable advance in the railway sector, combining operational efficiency, fuel savings and the reduction of CO2 emissions. By adopting this technology, VLI is aligned with the demands of a world in search of more sustainable and efficient practices. Project Leader is an example of how innovation and environmental commitment can positively transform rail transport, providing significant economic and ecological benefits.
