Tarping protects the load against rain, wind, and other factors, but requires strength, balance, and technique, especially in large-scale implements. Hiring helpers aims to reduce physical wear and speed up operations, although some truck drivers reject the change.
Hiring workers to assist in truck tarping is a practice existing in road transport. Labor records and port regulations recognize professionals and companies dedicated to placing, removing, and adjusting tarps on cargo vehicles.
A collective agreement registered in the Ministry of Labor’s Mediator system brings together the roles of driver’s assistant, loader, and tarper under the CBO code 7832-25. The document established a minimum wage of R$ 1,936.39 starting in September 2025 for the group covered by the agreement. The value does not represent a national average. Check the collective agreement.
Tarping may require more than one worker
A safety procedure from the Ports of Paraná mentions companies providing tarping, untarping, and tarp adjustment services. In the port areas covered by the document, it is prohibited to perform the activity using only one platform or just one worker.

The local regulation also requires preliminary risk analysis, training, and definition of communication between drivers and executors. Access the Ports of Paraná procedure.
Manual work presents physical risks
A scientific study published in 2011 compared three tarping systems. The manual method showed greater physical demand and more safety risks. Alternative systems reduced exposure to falls and decreased execution time. See the study on PubMed.
The Ministry of Labor recommends that tarp removal be done primarily with the worker on the ground. When this is not possible, platforms or fall protection systems should be used. Consult the official guide.
For bulk solids transported in open bodies, Contran Resolution No. 946 requires full coverage by tarp or similar device, properly anchored and maintained. Read the resolution.
