TRT-1 Decision Mandates Minimum Bus Operation During Bus Drivers’ Strike and Aims to Reduce Impact on Passengers in Rio de Janeiro

The Labor Court has mandated that 50% of Rio de Janeiro’s bus fleet continue operating during the bus drivers’ strike, set to begin at midnight this Monday (29).

The decision was made by the Regional Labor Court of the 1st Region (TRT-1) and establishes a minimum public transport operation during the strike.

Furthermore, in case of non-compliance, a daily fine of R$ 50,000 has been set for the entities involved.

Court Orders Half of Bus Fleet to Keep Running in Rio

Before the strike begins, the Labor Court ordered the maintenance of part of the bus fleet in operation in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

The preliminary decision was signed by Judge Maria Helena Motta, of the Regional Labor Court of the 1st Region (TRT-1).

According to the ruling, at least 50% of the buses must remain in operation during the bus drivers’ strike.

Thus, the measure aims to prevent a complete interruption of public transport and ensure minimum service to passengers.

Initial Union Proposal Suggested Fewer Buses During Strike

Previously, the Bus Drivers’ Union had presented a proposal with lower percentages for fleet operation during the strike.

The suggestion was to maintain 30% of the buses during peak hours and 15% during other periods.

However, the court assessed that these numbers would be insufficient given the population density and territorial extent of Rio de Janeiro.

Therefore, a greater circulation of vehicles was mandated during the movement.

Daily Fine of R$ 50,000 to be Imposed for Non-Compliance

In addition to defining the minimum fleet, the court established a financial penalty to ensure compliance with the decision.

Thus, if the ruling is not followed, a daily fine of R$ 50,000 may be imposed.

The fine may be applied separately to the entities involved in the strike.

Among them are the Union of Bus Drivers, representing the workers, and Rio Ônibus, an entity that brings together the companies responsible for public transportation.

Bus Drivers’ Strike Begins This Monday (29) in Rio

The bus drivers’ strike is scheduled to begin at 12:00 AM this Monday (29).

Therefore, during the strike, the court order requires that a portion of the fleet remains in operation.

With this, the decision seeks to ensure service for passengers who use public transportation to work, study, and access essential services.

The measure was taken on the eve of the movement and aims to balance the workers’ right to strike with the need for the basic operation of the city’s bus system.
