The South Korean Manufacturer Hyundai Plans to Launch, in the Coming Years, an Electric Car with the Capacity to Drive on Any Terrain, Capable of Surpassing Even the Ford Ranger

Hyundai is developing an electric car with legs, which may be more powerful than the Ford Ranger. The vehicle is named Tiger X-1 and its first beta model will be assembled in two years. Hyundai’s presentation about the electric car took place earlier this year, where the vehicle’s design and its main functions for the future were showcased. The electric car promises to transport payloads on any type of terrain, potentially being more effective than a Ford Ranger in more difficult terrains.

Unfortunately, Hyundai has not yet disclosed information on when the vehicle that may surpass the Ford Ranger will be launched, nor its price. What is known about the Tiger X-1 is that it is part of a project presented during CES 2019 called Elevate, which focuses on human transportation.

The vehicle will likely be used for scientific research activities and even rescue missions. Additionally, Hyundai indicated the use of the vehicle in space missions. Another function that the electric car with legs will be capable of performing is being connected to unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, which would be responsible for carrying and delivering items in hard-to-reach locations.

The vehicle can operate both with all-wheel drive on its wheels and a liftable axle, showcasing its “four legs.” What makes it better than a Ford Ranger is that, in case it gets stuck or needs to pass through places where its wheels cannot progress, it will use its legs. Moreover, the electric car can move in 360°, equipped with various sensors to assist during driving.

Hyundai’s Electric Car Can Be Recharged via Drones

The name of the vehicle that may surpass the Ford Ranger is an acronym for Transforming Intelligent Ground Excursion Robot.

The model belongs to the New Horizons Studio, Hyundai’s innovation center, in partnership with Autodesk, famous for its engineering software. Other details about the model have not been revealed, but there are reports of a possible recharge solution using drones, which may occur through induction.

Get to Know the New Horizons Studio

In September of last year, Hyundai Motor Group announced the creation of the New Horizons Studio, a studio located in Silicon Valley focused on developing new technologies that can contribute to new forms of mobility.

The manufacturer explains that the innovation center will build vehicles, like the Tiger X-1, surpassing traditional development limits, creating models that can traverse off-road terrain with “futuristic” mobility.

To make this possible, the manufacturer will combine mobility technology with robotics. According to Dr. John Suh, head of the center, the goal is to develop and produce the world’s first class of “Transformers” vehicles.
