Rio de Janeiro, December 01, 2020 – To offer an operation service offshore more optimized and with increasingly sustainable attitudes, Ocyan started implementing the 360º Rig View in one of its rigs – the first one to have the new system is the Norbe VIII. This would be the first ultra-deep water drilling rig in the country to have a tool based on the “Google Street View” concept, capable of providing virtual and remote navigation throughout the entire internal area of the vessel.
Rig View enables virtual 'boarding' at the unit without Ocyan's members having to face the entire logistical boarding process, including required mandatory training and risks associated with exposure to the industrial environment offshore. “We identified that this mechanism would be useful and would bring us excellent results by dispensing with unnecessary trips. When we accessed the system, we were able to identify several situations from a distance. The virtual tour proved to be advantageous and with multiple applications”, explains Fernanda Terra, a member of the operations team that coordinated the mapping work from the beginning.

The entire process took six months to complete and was conducted by an internal Ocyan team in partnership with staturp Media Glass. For Fillipe Eduardo Silva, then assistant manager of the rig, the main challenge of the project was the use of an existing technology, which was applicable and feasible in the environment of a drilling rig in full operation. The system should also bring efficiency gains to the business and have a low implementation cost. “Despite being a relatively consecrated technology in everyday use, and already explored in commercial and industrial business environments, there are not many options already developed for the specificity of a drillship. We needed to explore a really useful tool that would bring real benefits, well beyond a (surprising) virtual visit”, he added.
Ocyan has five drilling rigs, all contracted, and operates these assets with its own offshore crew, in addition to keeping representatives of the client and its outsourced suppliers on board. The company also uses an entire technical and operational contingent allocated on land, hundreds of kilometers away from the vessels, where the well operations take place. “The idea for the Rig View 360º came from a query requested by the client, which could only be clarified in the field. The displacement of a person to check the area of the vessel could be avoided if there was a realistic and reliable consultation tool that would allow a more sensitive spatial notion than 2D photos”, explains Rodrigo Chamusca Machado, responsible for Technology and Innovation at the Unit of Ocyan Drilling Business.
Among the advantages of the new system are assistance in planning interventions on board, support to the engineering team in modification projects, integration with new innovation systems and assistance in investigations. In addition, the use of the tool may reduce the number of shipments on the rig. “Today, 85% of the entire installation has been covered by work and the images are available to Ocyan. In addition to viewing, it is possible to remove measurements from a given space. In the future, as a continuation of the project, it will be possible to complement the remaining 15% or update any area that may eventually be modified. We are still moving forward to allow the integration of equipment specifications with the Rig View, which will allow technical consultations of various systems of the vessel using the tool”, concludes Chamusca.
