United Airlines temporarily disabled Starlink Wi‑Fi on around two dozen Embraer E175 jets. The decision was made after pilots reported interference in the radio signals used for communication with control towers. According to the company, the measure was preventive and did not pose safety risks to flights.

The interferences occurred after the installation of the Starlink antennas. Pilots reported static during the use of VHF radio.

The problem was associated with unintentional electromagnetic emissions coming from the satellite internet equipment. Despite the noise, there were no failures compromising the operation of the aircraft.

Target is to Equip Over 300 Aircraft by 2025

United received FAA authorization in March to install the Starlink system on its regional jet fleet. Since May, the company has been accelerating installation, with plans to equip up to 40 aircraft per month.

The goal is to cover the entire fleet — over 300 units — by the end of 2025. Each installation takes about eight hours per aircraft.

Fixes Have Already Been Applied to Part of the Fleet

Following the reports, teams from United and Starlink began working to correct the interferences. According to the company, the solution has already been applied to about one-third of the affected aircraft.

The fixes are being implemented during scheduled maintenance, without the need to take the planes out of operation or cancel flights.

Even with the suspension on some units, the installation schedule continues. The E175 jets are still being equipped, and the CRJ-550 models will also be included in the coming weeks. The company stated that no flights have been affected by this measure.

Service Will Be Reactivated Soon

United Airlines reaffirmed its commitment to providing free satellite Wi‑Fi for MileagePlus program passengers. The service is being gradually restored, with the expectation that it will be fully reactivated in the coming weeks.
