Usiminas Is Focusing on the Renewable Energy Market and Has Now Become the First Company in the Steel Industry to Test an Electric Bus. The Model Has a Range of 250 km and Can Reduce Up to 118 Tons of Annual Emissions

In search of new sources of renewable energy for its processes, Usiminas reports that it is the first in the steel industry to test an electric bus in its internal area and is working to incorporate this type of technology into its fleet soon. In partnership with Univale Transportes, the electric bus is part of the daily route for shuttles that transport employees within the Usiminas industrial plant.

The electric bus tested by Usiminas has a capacity to transport up to 30 seated passengers and can travel up to 250 kilometers on a single charge. Its charging time is up to 4 hours.

According to data from the system manufacturer, BYD, each vehicle reduces, on average, the emission of 118 tons of carbon dioxide annually into the atmosphere when considering 72,000 kilometers driven during this period, which is equivalent to planting more than 800 trees.

The renewable energy project is part of a series of actions by Usiminas to build an environmental efficiency agenda, with creative and essential solutions for the sustainability of the business. The electric bus from the steel industry will remain in a testing period for one month at Usiminas.

According to the company’s services manager, Victor Cavalcante, new technologies are being used in favor of the company to help reduce pollutant gas emissions and the inclusion of renewable energy. In addition to the effort to incorporate electric buses into the company’s fleet, the feasibility of other sustainable solutions for conscious, more economical, and innovative mobility is also being studied.

Electric Bus Market Is Growing in Brazil

In addition to BYD, the Chinese manufacturer Higer Bus confirmed in November its plans to start manufacturing vehicles in the country as early as next year, following the regular import phase of the first vehicles in Brazil, which will take place in the first half of this year.

Last year, the company began road testing in Brazil. The electric bus model used in the tests was the Azure A12BR, and the chosen company was SP Trans, which is responsible for overseeing public transportation in the city of São Paulo.

Usiminas Is Focusing on Renewable Energy

Usiminas is committed to creating a cleaner future in the steel industry and, thinking about this, has become a participant in the UN Global Compact, demonstrating its commitment to supporting a preventive approach to environmental issues.

As a market leader in steel within the country, the company is always looking to create innovative products that contribute technology and quality to the industry, while also contributing to sustainability. A great example of this is the steel aimed at renewable energy solutions and high mechanical resistance, mainly used by the automotive industry.
