On Monday (6), Anvisa was welcomed aboard the MSC Seaview by representatives of the Brazilian Association of Cruise Operators, from MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises, as well as PortosRio and the International Cruise Terminal Pier Mauá, which manages the port of Rio de Janeiro.

During the reception, which PortosRio was part of, data illustrating the success of the 2022-2023 cruise season were presented, marking the largest in the last ten years, bringing a positive economic impact of over R$ 3 billion for the country, with more than R$ 750 million for the city of Rio de Janeiro.

The CLIA thanked the port authority for its efforts in carrying out the dredging work, which enabled the simultaneous berthing of large cruise ships, contributing to the season’s success. Representatives from Pier Mauá, in turn, emphasized the productive partnership with the port authority and thanked for the timely completion of the dredging work.

The port authority felt honored to host such an important event and celebrated the partnership with the companies and agencies involved, as the cruise industry is vital for both tourism and the country’s economy, and a successful season is essential for the sector’s recovery after the pandemic.

The interim CEO of PortosRio, Jean Paulo Castro e Silva, thanked Anvisa for its role in managing the COVID-19 pandemic, which was crucial for the resumption of cruise seasons and the revitalization of the tourism sector, generating thousands of jobs and being essential for the local economy.

Castro e Silva also highlighted the expansion and modernization works at the Gamboa pier, which will allow larger ships to reach the area, benefiting the tourism sector. He emphasized that the sector is important for economic and social development, and deserves the attention of the public port authority.

Cruise companies, in turn, stated that the closer relationship between the sector and Anvisa during the pandemic period contributed to greater efficiency in the processes. Anvisa director Daniel Pereira highlighted that Anvisa’s fifth directorate, responsible for regulating and overseeing health standards at ports, airports, and borders, plays a vital role in the dynamics of port operations.

Anvisa’s role in controlling the pandemic is crucial for the recovery of the tourism sector, which is a significant source of employment and income. The closeness between cruise companies and Anvisa is an important step toward improving processes and ensuring the safety of passengers and crew members.

Cruise Tourism Sector Attentive to PortosRio’s Business Plan for 2023-2027, Highlighted by Anvisa as Important for Pandemic Control

PortosRio, responsible for Brazil’s second largest port complex, announced its business plan for 2023-2027 with projected investments of R$ 649 million. The goal is to handle over 63 million tons of cargo in 2023.

With six long-term leasing contracts and three transitional leasing agreements in force, the port of Rio de Janeiro has an area of 1.5 million m², of which approximately 290,000 m² are available for new leases across ten different areas, such as liquid bulk, steel products, general cargo, and offshore operations. Studies are already underway for a new support terminal for offshore operations, a general cargo terminal, and a liquid bulk terminal.

The Port of Itaguaí, the second largest public port in the country in terms of cargo volume, has an area of 2 million m² and features industrial port characteristics, where various companies can be established. Of the seven areas available for technical studies, one is designated for a new iron ore terminal, which is expected to be one of the largest projects in the national port sector. The business plan also includes onerous concessions for the granting of areas related to non-operational activities at both ports, such as logistics support areas and truck centers.

By next year, PortosRio plans to invest R$ 649 million in the Port of Itaguaí and the port of Rio de Janeiro. The dredging of deepening and widening of the derivative channel at the Port of Itaguaí and the completion of modernization and expansion of the Gamboa pier at the port of Rio de Janeiro are among the major works planned. The projection is to handle over 63 million tons of cargo in 2021 and nearly 70 million tons in 2027. Estimated revenues are R$ 1 billion in 2023 and R$ 1.12 billion in 2027.
