Discover the dimensions, structure, and numbers of Istana Nurul Iman, considered the largest residential palace in the world and one of the main national symbols of Brunei

The Istana Nurul Iman, located in Brunei, is recognized as the largest residential palace in the world. Opened in 1984, the complex was built to serve as the official residence of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. Additionally, the property boasts impressive dimensions and has established itself as one of the greatest symbols of the country’s sovereignty.

According to information released by the Guinness World Records and the Government of Brunei Darussalam, the palace has about 200,000 square meters of built area. Furthermore, its value is estimated at US$ 1.4 billion.

Palace comprises 1,788 rooms and large official spaces

First of all, what stands out the most is the number of rooms in the complex.

In total, the Istana Nurul Iman features:

  • 1,788 rooms;
  • 257 bathrooms;
  • 18 elevators;
  • spacious halls for official ceremonies;
  • a banquet hall with a capacity to host up to 5,000 guests.

Moreover, the spaces were designed to accommodate both the official functions of the government and the activities of the royal family.

Therefore, the building is considered one of the largest residences ever built.

External area further enhances the grandeur of the complex

Besides the internal structure, the external area is also impressive.

The palace features five large swimming pools, carefully preserved gardens, and climate-controlled stables for over 200 polo horses.

Similarly, the entire property was designed to offer infrastructure compatible with large ceremonies and official events.

Thus, the dimension of the complex goes far beyond the internal spaces.

Architecture combines Islamic tradition and modern engineering

At the same time, the architectural design draws attention for the combination of different styles.

The construction was developed with elements of Islamic architecture, while modern engineering techniques were employed during the execution of the work.

Moreover, the building was erected by thousands of workers, becoming an important architectural landmark since its completion in 1984.

Consequently, the Istana Nurul Iman came to represent not only the official residence of the sultan but also one of the greatest symbols of the national identity of Brunei.

One of the greatest architectural landmarks on the planet

Finally, the Istana Nurul Iman remains recognized worldwide for its dimensions and the complexity of its construction.

In addition to housing 1,788 rooms, the palace impresses with the combination of luxury, functionality, and tradition.

Thus, the residence continues to be among the most notable constructions in the world and maintains its role as one of the main architectural heritages of Brunei.
