Recent layoffs have affected employees in several areas over the past two weeks.

Initially, the impacts reached collaborators from the Pixel, Nest, Fitbit, Assistant and engineering divisions.

Subsequently, the sales, advertising teams and the division responsible for the video platform, YouTube, were also targeted for cuts.

Recent reports indicate that these layoffs may not be the last, as the company has warned employees about the possibility of more layoffs throughout the year.

An internal memo signed by CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that the recent cuts could be just the start of a series of adjustments planned for 2024.

Pichai emphasized that the changes are part of a strategy to achieve the company's “ambitious goals” and invest in its “biggest priorities” during the year.

Employees fear losing their jobs

Although he assured that the cuts will not reach the same scale as last year, when the company laid off 12 thousand employees, representing around 6% of its workforce, Pichai admitted that Google will need to make “difficult choices” to make the planned investments viable. for this year.

After a profitable 2023, especially with advances in artificial intelligence (AI), the company continues its expense containment strategy.

The Google CEO emphasized that the main objective of these cuts is to simplify the operations of some teams and increase efficiency in specific areas.

He also highlighted that most of the structural changes have already been implemented, but some teams will still undergo restructuring throughout the year to reallocate resources, which could impact some management positions. day.
