Subsequently, the sales, advertising, and the division responsible for the video platform, YouTube, were also affected by cuts.
Recent information indicates that these layoffs may not be the last, as the company warned employees about the possibility of more dismissals throughout the year.
An internal memo signed by CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that the recent cuts may just be the beginning of a series of adjustments planned for 2024.
Pichai emphasized that the changes are part of a strategy to achieve the company’s “ambitious goals” and invest in its “top priorities” during the year.
Employees Fear Losing Their Jobs
Although he assured that the cuts will not reach the same scale as last year, when the company laid off 12,000 employees, representing about 6% of its workforce, Pichai admitted that Google will need to make “hard choices” to enable the planned investments for this year.
After a profitable 2023, particularly with advances in artificial intelligence (AI), the company continues its strategy of controlling expenses.
The CEO of Google emphasized that the primary objective of these cuts is to streamline the operations of certain teams and increase efficiency in specific areas.
He also highlighted that a significant portion of the structural changes has already been implemented, but some teams will still undergo restructuring throughout the year to reallocate resources, which may affect some job positions.
The news of potential mass layoffs raises concerns among employees, but Pichai stressed that Google is committed to balancing its goals with the need to make tough decisions to sustain growth and innovation.
