Federal government prepares to increase ethanol blend in gasoline to 32%, a measure that could lead the country to self-sufficiency in gasoline production, while the biodiesel increase still depends on additional tests
According to Reuters data, the ethanol blend in gasoline will increase from 30% to 32% in the coming days in Brazil, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated this Thursday. The government also plans to raise biodiesel from 15% to 16%, with additional tests.
Lula declared that Brazil will announce the change soon. The measure expands the presence of ethanol in gasoline sold in the country and reinforces the national biofuels strategy.
Ethanol blend
The proposal had already been indicated by the Ministry of Energy and Mines, which informed that the increase to 32% would be evaluated at a meeting scheduled for May 7.

The next few hours will be marked by increasing tension regarding the stance to be adopted by the Central Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (Copom/BC) concerning the benchmark interest rate (Selic) at the end of this Wednesday’s (17th) meeting. Although the market is ‘divided’ on the committee’s decision, the stronger trend in recent weeks is that the rate will remain unchanged at the current level of 14.50% per year. Meanwhile, a minority faction still ‘bets’ on a 0.25 percentage point (p.p) decrease.

National gasoline
The ministry also pointed out that the increase in the ethanol blend would lead Brazil to self-sufficiency in gasoline production, should the proposal be approved within the foreseen schedule.
In addition to gasoline, Lula mentioned the intention to raise the mandatory biodiesel blend from 15% to 16%. This change, however, depends on additional tests, as authorities had previously informed before the presidential speech.
The decision on ethanol will be addressed in the coming days, while biodiesel remains in the technical validation phase.
