Chery’s plug-in hybrid diesel pickup targets demanding markets with a size superior to traditional rivals, strong load and towing numbers, electric range for short trips, and an off-road package aimed at work, leisure, and long distances.
Scheduled to arrive in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2026, the Chery Stockman emerges as one of the most unusual bets among mid-size pickups being developed for the global market.
With a 2.5 turbo diesel engine, plug-in hybrid system, 3.5-ton towing capacity, and 1,000 kg payload, the model aims to combine professional use, family driving, and off-road capability.
Presented by Chery Australia in Sydney, in February 2026, the project was still identified by the code KP31 before receiving the name Stockman.

At the public debut, the brand stated that the production version would be the world’s first ute with a plug-in hybrid diesel system, a solution different from most current electrified pickups.
Chery Stockman’s plug-in hybrid diesel engine
Instead of following only the path of electrified gasoline engines or fully electric setups, the Stockman bets on an architecture designed for long distances and heavy work.
According to Chery, the setup combines the 2.5 turbo diesel engine with electric components, allowing short trips in electric mode and using diesel when there is a greater demand for range or mechanical effort.
In the specifications released by the manufacturer, the pickup appears with a combined power of 350 kW, equivalent to about 476 hp, in addition to a total torque of 800 Nm.
An electric range of up to 100 km in the NEDC cycle was also reported, a measurement that usually presents more favorable results than stricter standards adopted in other markets.
Among the technical data highlighted by Chery, the thermal efficiency of the diesel engine is one of the central points of the proposal.
During the KP31 concept presentation, the company reported an efficiency of 47% and consumption 10% better than the average of conventional diesel setups, still subject to final approval.
Dimensions and load capacity of the new pickup
In terms of size, the production version was listed by Chery with 5.45 meters in length, 2.01 meters in width, 1.89 meters in height, and 3.25 meters in wheelbase.
These dimensions position the Stockman as a robust double cab, aimed at consumers who need to combine interior space, functional cargo bed, towing capacity, and frequent use on different types of terrain.
The cargo bed reported by the manufacturer measures 1.56 meters in length, 1.56 meters in width, and 50 centimeters in height.
With the capacity to carry 1 ton and tow 3,500 kg with brakes, the pickup targets users who transport equipment, heavy loads, trailers, or leisure items without migrating to full-size models.
Because of this combination, comparisons with names like Hilux and Ranger naturally arise within the mid-size pickup segment.
More than just competing on price or appearance, Chery attempts to enter the category with the technical argument of plug-in electrification without abandoning diesel.
Off-road package with 4WD and differential locks
For off-road use, the Stockman comes with 4WD traction, all-terrain tires as standard, front suspension with double wishbone, and rear axle with leaf springs.
Present in many work pickups, this rear configuration favors load resistance and stability in towing situations, especially when the vehicle travels on poor roads or rural areas.
The minimum ground clearance reported is at least 247 mm with full load, a relevant number for tackling ramps, light trails, dirt roads, and uneven sections.
Additionally, the package includes front, central, and rear differential locks, crawl control, and tight turn assist for slow maneuvers on low-traction surfaces.
Inside the cabin, Chery tries to align the Stockman with pickups used also as family or adventure vehicles, not just as work tools.
The package mentioned by the brand includes leather seats, suede finish, wireless charging, dual-zone air conditioning, and a premium sound system.
Launch of the Chery Stockman in Australia
Despite the high numbers, part of the information released by Chery still appears as preliminary and depends on final stages before being sold to the public.
Electric range, consumption, power, and towing capacity are subject to final specification, testing, certification, and regulatory approval in the Australian market.
This condition may cause adjustments between the vehicle presented, the pre-launch material, and the version that will arrive at dealerships.
So far, prices, versions, final list of equipment, and approved consumption have not yet been detailed by the manufacturer for the Australian public.
The arrival of the Stockman also shows the advancement of Chinese brands in a category traditionally occupied by Japanese, American, and Thai manufacturers.
In the case of Chery, the strategy involves offering a pickup with diesel strength, electric use for short trips, and an off-road package aimed at markets where load, range, and towing remain decisive.
