Imagine being able to drastically reduce toll expenses on the highways you use daily. Few drivers know, but it is possible to obtain up to 90% discount with a system that is already in operation on several Brazilian roads.

This advantage can represent significant savings for those who frequently travel on tolled highways.

The Frequent User Discount (DUF) is a program that offers progressive reductions in toll rates according to the number of times the same driver passes through a particular stretch within the same month.

This model is in operation on several highways and can represent significant savings for frequent drivers.

How Does the Toll Discount Work?

The DUF is automatically applied for drivers who use electronic tags in their vehicles.

The discount can reach up to 90%, depending on the number of times the driver passes through the same toll within a period of 30 days.

The count starts from the second passage through the same location and direction.

“The DUF can reach a 96% discount, depending on the frequency of passages and the same direction throughout the month,” explained Diego Ros Quinto, vice president of Abepam and financial director of Move Mais in an interview with Diário do Litoral.

This discount is already being applied on highways such as SP-310, SP-326, and SP-333, managed by Econoroeste, as well as Via Dutra and Rio-Santos.

SP-333 even has a free flow toll system, an innovative technology that eliminates the need to stop.

Basic Discount on the Fee Benefits Drivers

In addition to the DUF, those who use electronic tags also automatically receive a Basic Fare Discount (DBT) of 5%.

This benefit is valid on 27 federal and 58 state highways, ensuring cost reduction even for those who do not travel frequently.

Problems with the Free Flow System Lead to Fines

Despite the advantages, the free flow toll technology has caused problems for many drivers.

In the first two months of operation on the Rodovia dos Tamoios, in the coastal region of São Paulo, nearly 10,000 fines were recorded.

Many drivers claim that the charges were unfair or that they simply forgot to pay the toll, which must be paid virtually if the vehicle does not have an installed tag.

Diego Ros Quinto warns that problems in tag identification may be caused by incorrect installation or by repositioning the sticker on the windshield.

“It is important to follow the installation and handling instructions and, under no circumstances, remove or reposition the tag on the glass,” said the executive.

Other factors that may compromise reading include films on the front glass and damage to the device caused by impacts or improper handling.

To ensure efficiency, both tags and reading antennas undergo rigorous testing under extreme temperature, rain, and wind conditions.

If reading fails, the system also uses license plate recognition to carry out the charge.

Integration and Future of the Toll System

For the free flow model to fully function in Brazil, the integration of payment systems into a single digital database is necessary.

Currently, standardized communication protocols between different concessionaires are being discussed to ensure that vehicle identification and billing are done automatically and without errors.

According to Abepam, the association representing companies in the vehicle tag sector, Toll Collection Payment Administrators (AMAPs) already have the capacity to meet this demand.
