New Version of the C-390, in Collaboration with the Portuguese Air Force, Promises to Revolutionize Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Missions, Expanding Its Capabilities for Complex Functions.
The Portuguese Air Force (FAP) announced on April 1st its intention to join Embraer and the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) to develop collaborative studies aimed at adapting the multi-mission tactical transport aircraft KC-390 Millennium.
The goal is to adapt the aircraft to carry out Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions, expanding the platform’s capabilities and considering new operational scenarios, especially regarding maritime patrol.
The Partnership Between Embraer, FAB, and FAP Represents a Milestone in the Development of Brazilian Military Aviation.
As a result of this collaborative effort, the characteristics of the aircraft will be expanded, allowing not only the replacement of older models but also the competition for space in the global market with aviation giants like the Boeing P-8 Poseidon.

In the Xinjiang desert, China erects a giant chemical plant over 390 billion tons of coal, deploys 300 driverless trucks to work nonstop, and uses robotic arms that swap batteries in 6 minutes to reduce dependence on oil.
In December 2024, Embraer and the Brazilian Air Force had signed an agreement to enhance the KC-390 Millennium’s capacity, focusing on maritime patrol and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations.
In his statement, Lieutenant-Brigadier Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno, commander of the FAB, highlighted the aircraft’s potential for these missions and commended the contribution of the Portuguese Air Force, emphasizing the importance of the technical knowledge brought by the European country.
A Modular Solution That Opens New Paths in the International Market
The CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, Bosco da Costa Junior, emphasized that the ISR solution developed by Embraer will be completely modular.
This means that any C-390 aircraft can be equipped with the ISR module, allowing it to adapt for special missions such as patrol, reconnaissance, and other critical activities.
This versatility not only makes the C-390 a modern and effective alternative to the old Lockheed P-3AM Orion of the FAB but also positions the model as a strong competitor in the international market. Embraer is prepared to face giants like the Boeing P-8 Poseidon, which is already a worldwide standard in maritime patrols, but with the advantage of offering a fully national and technologically advanced solution.
According to Bosco, several countries are interested in the new capabilities of the C-390, which could signify a new and promising business opportunity for Embraer, both in Brazil and abroad.
Among these countries are India and Saudi Arabia, which are in the process of selecting new aircraft for their air forces, with potential acquisitions of 40 to 80 units.
The Bet on India: C-390M to Increase Versatility
In a strategic move, Embraer has been presenting the C-390M as a robust alternative in the bidding process for the Indian Air Force (IAF), which is seeking to acquire up to 60 Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA).
Embraer’s bold proposal includes the possibility of equipping the C-390M with hardpoints under the wings, allowing the aircraft to carry air-to-surface weapon systems.
This would position the C-390M as an even more versatile platform, capable of conducting missions not only for transport but also for ground attack and anti-ship operations.
The adaptation of the C-390M for transporting heavy missiles and sophisticated weapon systems, such as the Rudram-II (an 800 kg air-to-surface missile), would significantly increase its combat operation capabilities.
The proposal also includes utilizing the C-390M for anti-ship missions, with the potential for transporting medium-range missiles such as the NASM-MR or MRAShM, reinforcing Embraer’s strategic position in the global market.
Transformation into Mother Ship for Drones: The Technological Innovation in the C-390M
In addition to transport and attack capabilities, Embraer is exploring a new frontier for the C-390M: transforming it into a true mother ship for drones.
This concept aligns with the latest trends in aerial warfare, which increasingly prioritize the use of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) for reconnaissance, attack, and other functions.
The idea is for the C-390M to be capable of launching drones from the air, functioning as a versatile platform for the use of swarms or autonomous UAVs.
Although Embraer has not officially confirmed this variant, the modular design of the C-390M would allow for quick adaptation without structural modifications, meeting the growing demand for high-tech platforms for complex missions.
Force Multiplier: C-390M to Increase IAF Operational Capabilities
The integration of weapon systems, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, and the ability to launch drones make the C-390M a true multifunctional platform.
With these innovations, the C-390M can become a force multiplier, offering operational capabilities beyond what it already possesses as a transport and aerial refueling aircraft.
The Indian Air Force, which plans to acquire between 40 and 80 units of the C-390M, is already considering manufacturing some of these aircraft locally through technology transfer. Additionally, India is also evaluating the creation of additional variants of the aircraft to meet specific requirements, such as maritime patrol, combat, and ISR missions.
Embraer C-390M: The Versatility the Market Needs
In summary, the Embraer C-390M is not just a transport aircraft. It is a modular platform that can rapidly adapt to various missions, from combat operations to patrol and reconnaissance functions.
This versatility positions the C-390M as one of the most attractive options for air forces worldwide, especially in emerging markets looking to modernize their fleets with cutting-edge technology and effective solutions.
As the C-390M progresses in its development, the Brazilian aircraft demonstrates that it is more than capable of facing major global military powers, offering a national and highly technological alternative to contemporary air defense needs.
Will the C-390M truly change the dynamics of the military aviation market, making Brazil a leader in this field?
