Google Offers Voluntary Severance Program With 14 Weeks of Pay for US Employees Amid Restructuring and Focus on AI
Google has launched a new voluntary severance program aimed at employees in the United States. The measure offers a minimum package of 14 weeks of pay for those who choose to end their relationship with the company.
Enrollment can be done until July 1. The proposal affects areas such as research, marketing, communications, central engineering, and other sectors of the knowledge and information (K&I) group.
The initiative is part of the company’s ongoing effort to reduce costs and restructure teams. In 2023, Google laid off 12,000 people in what were considered abrupt cuts.

This time, the approach is different: instead of direct layoffs, workers have the option to leave voluntarily, with financial support.
Severance and Focus on Internal Motivation
Nick Fox, head of the K&I group, stated in an internal memo that the goal is to keep only the professionals who feel connected to the company’s current strategy.
According to him, those who are not engaged or have difficulty meeting expectations can opt for a departure with financial backing. The idea is to allow a mutual and transparent decision.
This policy had previously been applied to divisions such as Android and Pixel at the beginning of 2024. Other areas of the company, such as human resources, legal, and finance, also underwent similar rounds of voluntary departures between 2024 and 2025.
According to internal reports, this model has been better received by employees, especially following the criticisms generated by mass layoffs in the recent past.
Return to In-Person Work Pressures Decisions
Another factor weighing on employees’ decisions is the return to in-person work. Google has mandated that all employees living within 80 km of an office must be present at least three times a week until September. Those who do not comply with the new rule may be dismissed, also with severance.
This requirement is part of the company’s plan to reorganize priorities, boost investments in artificial intelligence, and prepare new initiatives.
To this end, the company has revamped its internal learning platform, now with a greater focus on AI, sidelining programs less connected to strategic objectives.
Focus on AI and Continuous Restructuring
Even with cuts and restructuring, Google claims its focus remains on innovation. Artificial intelligence plays a central role in the company’s plans for the coming years.
By offering structured exits and support packages, the company aims to preserve internal trust and align its human resources with new strategic directions.
