Family Initiative in Águas Frias Brings Together Great-Granddaughter and Great-Grandfather for Four Years in a Daily Routine of Studies, Affection, and Learning, Transforming Bonds, Combating Isolation, and Redefining Aging in the Rural Environment
The student Brenda Schiavo, 11 years old, teaches her great-grandfather Pedro Donato, 91 years old, how to read, write, and use a cell phone in the countryside of Águas Frias, a family initiative that has lasted four years and transforms routines, bonds, and daily learning.
Daily Walk and Well-Defined Roles in Linha Serafina
Every day, after lunch, Brenda walks five minutes to her great-grandfather’s house in Linha Serafina, where they both take on, with discipline, the roles of teacher and student.
The routine started simply and has solidified over time, with frequent meetings that maintain commitment, curiosity, and affection.

Family has lived for over 50 years without electricity and running water at home in the South of Minas, 10 minutes from the city, improvising light, bath, and water while facing a lack of basic resources and awaiting property regularization.
“It started back in 2022 when I gathered the family and asked if they would accept my idea. They supported it, and he agreed as well,” Brenda says.
The student says she feels happy to see her great-grandfather’s progress and appreciates that he embraced the idea, maintaining the effort even with the natural limitations of age.
Organized Schedule Between Learning and Fun
The classes follow a schedule with subjects like English, history, geography, and physical education, always adapted to the age and conditions of the student.
“Every day is a different subject. Physical Education can’t run because he is 91 years old, but we play games and have fun,” Brenda explains.
Pedro learns to read, write, do math, and practices playful activities that stimulate memory, attention, and daily interaction.
Study as a Way to Learn and Distract Oneself
To NSC TV, Pedro said he sees the classes as an opportunity for learning and distraction, having not studied in his youth due to work.
Today, he writes down everything that his great-granddaughter teaches, showing constant interest, even acknowledging the differences between the present and the past.
“It also serves to entertain. We spend time and enjoy life a little,” he affirms, in a humorous tone.
Home Classes: Pride of the Family and Recognition from the School
The family closely follows and takes pride in the dedication of both, observing discipline, responsibility, and ongoing involvement in the proposed activities.
Marilei Alves, Brenda’s mother, says she was surprised by the decision, thinking it would last only a few days, but the routine has already accumulated four years.
According to her, Pedro is disciplined and concerned about the activities, and the experience creates memories, strengthens bonds, and brings joy to the girl.
Principal Liane Galão praises the initiative, considers the attitude moving and rewarding, and highlights the value of the gesture for different generations, emphasizing the remarkable example of family care.
