With The Rise Of Chinese Electric Vehicle Competition, Ford Expands Investments In Europe To Strengthen Its Competitiveness In The Automotive Sector.

Ford is strengthening its investments in Europe to face the growing presence of Chinese automakers in the electric vehicle market.

The company announced a new investment of €4.4 billion (US$ 4.8 billion) to restructure its operations on the continent and reduce its debt.

Ford Restructuring To Cut Costs

Ford has been facing challenges in Europe, with “significant losses” in recent years. To address this situation, the company is looking to cut costs and simplify its operations.

In November, it announced the layoff of 4,000 employees by 2027, citing below-expected demand and competition from new electric models, including those from Chinese brands like BYD and MG, owned by SAIC.

The new investment will be used to reduce the debt of the German subsidiary Ford-Werke GmbH, which currently totals US$ 6.3 billion. The automaker also aims to strengthen its product line and increase efficiency to compete in the market.

Support For Transformation

John Lawler, Vice President of Ford Motor Company, stated that the capital injection will help in the transformation of the company in Europe.

According to him, Ford needs “to simplify its structures, reduce costs, and increase efficiency” to compete with the new automakers.

Lawler also advocated that European lawmakers create “a clear political agenda” to drive the adoption of electric vehicles in accordance with consumer demand.

In recent years, Ford has been heavily investing in the continent to adapt to the market. In 2022, it allocated US$ 2 billion to modernize its plant in Cologne, Germany, which now produces electric models.

New Electric Models

The Cologne plant is responsible for producing two electric models, the Explorer and the Capri. In December, Ford unveiled its fourth electric model for the European market, the Puma Gen-E, which will be manufactured in Romania.

The company seeks to better position itself against the strong competition from Chinese automakers, which have been launching cheaper and more technologically advanced models.

Ford is betting on the modernization of its factories and new products to ensure its presence in the European market in the coming years.
