Researchers from the University of Edinburgh have found an intriguing hypothesis about how extraterrestrial civilizations might communicate. According to Arjun Berera and Jaime Calderón Figueroa, quantum communication could allow signals to be sent across interstellar distances without loss of information.

One of the challenges of this process is decoherence, where quantum states are disrupted by their environment. However, in space, where matter is extremely rare, this problem could be minimized.
Berera and Calderón Figueroa specifically analyzed X-ray photons, particles of light that, according to their calculations, could traverse the Milky Way without suffering significant decoherence.
This means that if an advanced civilization mastered this technology, it could send messages across enormous distances, potentially from one side of the galaxy to the other.
The hypothesis raises new possibilities for the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). So far, efforts have focused on capturing radio signals and other classical forms of communication.
However, the investigators suggest that one should also look for quantum signals. One possible indication would be the simultaneous occurrence of classical and quantum signals, which could indicate evidence of quantum teleportation.
The study does not claim that extraterrestrial civilizations are actually using this technology, but proposes a new path for future investigations. If an extraterrestrial civilization has already developed this type of communication, scientists on Earth may eventually detect their signals.
As research in quantum communication advances, new observations may help clarify whether we are truly alone in the universe or if someone is already trying to make contact.
