The closure of production at the unit in Rio Grande do Sul
The announcement of the closure of the factory in Gravataí was made in May 2019, when the manufacturer started a process of productive reorganization that included the adaptation of the factory in Campinas, in the interior of the state of São Paulo, for the production of tires that had been manufactured for 45 years in gaucho soil.
In the meantime, the government of Rio Grande do Sul unsuccessfully tried to convince the Italian multinational to give up the idea. Pirelli says it has adopted measures to reduce the social impact of closing the factory, such as transferring workers to other group operations and conducting professional qualification courses to replace those who lost their jobs.
An agreement with the union that represents factory workers in the region also provides for financial incentives, in accordance with length of service, and extension of the health plan for six months to dismissed workers.

BraCham – Brazil-China Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Service and Innovation – had its representatives on a series of technical visits in Rio Grande do Sul, where they had access to several projects that aroused the interest of the Chinese, especially in the cities of Caxias do Sul. South and Rondinha. The Chinese showed interest in the graphene factory of UCS (University of Caxias do Sul), at the Serra Gaúcha Regional Airport, in Vila Oliva, and at the Porto do Litoral Norte, in Rondinha.
The city of Caxias do Sul drew attention due to its business and technological position in Rio Grande do Sul. Therefore, it must be the first Brazilian city to host the BraCham office. The headquarters should be in the UCS Science, Technology and Innovation Park, close to the University's graphene factory, TecnoUCS with the endorsement of the Chinese government.
The UCS graphene plant allows the expansion of productivity to up to 5 kg/year, enabling UCSGraphene to provide services to the national and international markets in several sectors. Applications range from electronics, coatings and metals, to regenerative medicine. Some examples of these uses were presented to visitors, as well as a visit to the manufacturing plant, which currently has an installed production capacity of 500 kg/year.
