Chapel of Our Lady of Good Journey Witnessed the Journey of the Future Emperor
Inaugurated in 1814, the chapel became the first parish matrix in the region. Despite its importance, in the early years, it faced precariousness: accounts from old residents indicate that it was in ruins, having only three walls and a gate, without a roof to protect it.
During the process of Independence, the chapel gained historical prominence. Records confirm that Dom Pedro I passed by the location while following the Santos Road towards Ipiranga.
Popular tradition still claims that the regent prince made a prayer at the altar before continuing his journey.
Frequent Stop for Travelers
In the 19th century, besides Dom Pedro I, drovers and travelers traversing the Santos Road also commonly stopped at the chapel. There, they sought blessings and protection before continuing their path, solidifying the space as a pilgrimage site.
Currently, visiting the Chapel of Our Lady of Good Journey is free. Located at Rua Marechal Deodoro, 1131, in downtown São Bernardo, the space remains a cultural and religious reference.
A few meters away, the Mother Church of Our Lady of Good Journey also attracts worshippers and visitors, impressing with its grandeur and the sacred paintings that preserve the history of faith in the region.
