In Interview, President Reveals Plans That Unite Development and Preservation, with an International Police Center, High-Speed Internet and a “COP of Truth” to Show the World the Reality of the Region.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that the Amazônia is Brazil in its most original form, advocating for a new approach that unites environmental preservation and economic growth for the local population. In an interview with Rede Amazônica, he detailed strategic projects such as the International Police Cooperation Center and Norte Conectado, and assured that the development of the region can occur without deforestation.
Sustainable Development: Growth and Preservation in the Amazon
The president emphasized that the development of the region no longer needs to follow the old model of devastation. “We don’t need to cut down trees to plant something,” he said. Lula mentioned the existence of 40 million hectares of degraded land that can be utilized for production.
He highlighted that the Amazon is not just a “sanctuary for humanity,” as it is home to people who wish to work and have access to material goods, quality education and health. For the president, creating these conditions is the way to ensure the preservation of the forest and its connection with the rest of the country.

Strengthened Security: The Fight Against Crime in the Amazon Region
To expand surveillance, the International Police Cooperation Center (IPCC) was announced in Manaus. The center will unite police officers from all Amazonian states and neighboring countries for a tough fight against illegal mining, illegal logging, arms and drug trafficking.
Lula stated that organized crime should be treated as a “multinational industry” and that, with the effective presence of the state, laws will be respected. The integrated approach seeks to protect the forest and the population.
Strategic Projects for the Future: Connectivity, Infrastructure and Energy
The Norte Conectado program was presented as a “digital revolution” for the Amazon, bringing top-tier communication to all states in the region. Regarding BR-319, the president stated that the highway “needs to be built,” but with the responsibility to prevent the advance of deforestation and land grabbing.
Lula also defended the exploration of oil off the coast of Amapá, emphasizing the experience of Petrobras and the necessary balance. According to him, the resources from fossil fuels can finance the energy transition to clean sources such as solar and wind.
COP 30 in Belém: the “COP of Truth” in the Heart of the Forest
Lula expressed confidence in the success of the COP 30, which will be held in Belém. The choice of location aims to show the world the local reality, including its 30 million inhabitants.
Despite the infrastructure challenges, he mentioned federal investments and the hiring of ships to expand lodging. The president described the event as the “COP of Truth,” a moment to discuss the climate crisis and demand commitment from wealthy countries for forest maintenance.
Support for Local Peoples and Producers
The president ensured that “no small producer of açaí, honey, or nuts will be harmed” by tariffs imposed by the United States. A fund was created to assist those in trouble and, if necessary, the government will purchase the excess production.
Regarding the Yanomami people, Lula highlighted the creation of a governmental structure to ensure citizenship. He reported that 98% of illegal mining has been eliminated in the region and that he will visit the heart of the jungle to assess living conditions and inaugurate a hospital, reinforcing his commitment.
