Germany Faces Labor Shortage And Opens Thousands Of Jobs For Foreigners: Opportunities In Health, Technology, Construction And Logistics Promise To Attract Global Talents. Discover How To Apply For The Jobs!
Germany faces a potential labor shortage due to population decline unless it promotes large-scale immigration in the coming years. According to a study released this Tuesday (26) by the Bertelsmann Foundation, reported by UOL, the German labor market could see a reduction of up to 10% in the workforce by 2040. To avoid this scenario, the country will need to increase the influx of foreign workers, which should create thousands of new job openings in strategic sectors such as health, technology, construction and logistics.
Jobs In Germany Are Expected To Reach 288 Thousand With Possible Labor Shortage
The German workforce could decline from the current 46.4 million to 41.9 million. It is estimated that by 2060 this reduction could reach 35.1 million. The study on labor shortages was authored by Alexander Kubis from the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) in Germany, and Lutz Schneider from Coburg University.
The research is based on data from the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB). To prevent this from happening, according to the conclusion of the study, Germany would need to create job openings for 288 thousand qualified foreign professionals each year in order to fill vacancies left by the aging population.

Furthermore, according to a more pessimistic projection from the study, it would be necessary to occupy 368 thousand positions in Germany per year until 2040. Currently, Germany is already experiencing a labor shortage, especially in fields related to nursing, technology, construction, and logistics.
According to migration expert Susanne Schultz from Bertelsmann, speaking to DW, the exit of baby boomers from the labor market presents significant challenges. The solution, in the expert’s view, is to reduce the barriers to immigration for workers.
Initiatives By Germany To Promote Future Jobs For Foreigners
It is worth mentioning that in 2023, the German government relaxed some rules focused on opening jobs in Germany for foreign workers, aiming to reduce the time and bureaucratic obstacles for qualified professionals to obtain work visas in the country. At the time, the German interior minister, Nancy Faeser, stated that the new immigration law is the most modern in the world.
Another way to circumvent the labor shortage and create job openings was the creation of the Chancenkarte (Opportunities Card), launched in June of this year.
The card allows a residence scheme in the country for professionals from outside the European Union who wish to seek jobs in Germany. The German government expects to grant around 200 thousand visas by the end of 2024. Those interested in jobs for foreigners can access the EURES Platform.
Understand More About The Labor Shortage In Europe
On the other hand, the Bertelsmann Foundation highlights that foreign workers will not come to Germany “without a more welcoming culture from local authorities and companies” and without “the perspective of staying long-term.”
The problem of labor shortages currently affects virtually all EU member countries facing the same challenge: how to address the lack of professionals for job openings in an increasingly aging population?
To keep economies moving, many countries are appealing to attract foreign workers and open jobs for foreigners, even those nations that maintain a strong anti-immigration stance. It is estimated that about two-thirds of small and medium-sized European companies are unable to meet the demand for professionals.
