First, let’s understand what the Autobahn is. Literally translated, it means “Road for Cars”. But what we, here in Brazil, think when we hear “Autobahn” is that part of the road with no speed limit, right? Well, that’s true, but that’s only part of the story.

Not all roads in Germany are free of limits; only some specific sections. They have a golden rule: no overtaking on the right. The left lane is sacred, only for overtaking. And if you’re not in a hurry, or your car isn’t that great, stay in the right lane and keep the way clear.

On the Autobahn, there are times when you are allowed to accelerate without fear of fines. However, even so, the Autobahn Polizei (the special highway police) suggests that, even in the unlimited lanes, it would be ideal to keep up to 130 km/h. Of course, this is more of a safety tip than a rule.
