However, the Brazil CRT group, which presented itself as an intermediary for a Chinese consortium, chose Mataraca as the base for a megaproject that promised to turn the municipality into a global model of innovation and technology.
The Futuristic Vision That Impressed Brazil
The plan, announced with great fanfare, envisioned the construction of a “smart city” that would be a landmark on the South American continent.
Among the promises were:
State-of-the-art ecological skyscrapers designed to harness solar and wind energy.
Automated public transportation, entirely powered by clean energy.
The creation of a cutting-edge offshore port, capable of rivaling the largest ports in the world.
Research centers for artificial intelligence and robotics, attracting the greatest minds from the planet.
For local residents and authorities, the proposal sounded like a distant dream.
But with the figure of R$ 9 trillion being widely publicized, expectations quickly grew.
The Initial Euphoric Reaction
The mayor of Mataraca, Egberto Madrugada, was one of the first to express enthusiasm for the project, stating in interviews that the town was ready to “leap into the future”.
Local and state politicians also celebrated the announcement, seeing in the proposal an opportunity to put Paraíba in the global spotlight.
However, it didn’t take long for doubts about the project’s feasibility to arise.
The First Cracks in the Chinese Dream
Shortly after the announcement, investigations began to be conducted by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Paraíba, led by prosecutor Ellen Veras Ximenes.
Various aspects of the project began to raise suspicions:
The origin of the money: there was no proof that the Brazil CRT group or the Chinese investors had the necessary R$ 9 trillion.
Irregular documentation: parts of the urban planning plan were copies of projects used in cities in China and even Europe.
Credibility of Brazil CRT: the intermediary company had no recognized history and was not even properly registered in Brazil or China.
Lack of technical details: there were no environmental or economic impact studies to support the project’s grandeur.
The Implosion of the Project and the Frustration in Mataraca
As investigations progressed, it became clear that the megaproject was unsustainable.
The Chinese consulate in Brazil stated that there was no official relationship between the government or recognized companies and the Brazil CRT group.
In the following weeks, the project was officially discarded, leaving Mataraca’s population frustrated and the city hall silent.
Why Was Mataraca Chosen?
The choice of Mataraca raised many questions.
Experts suggest that its strategic location, close to the coast and with ample areas for construction, may have attracted the supposed investors.
Additionally, being a small municipality with low media exposure, the town could have been seen as an easy target for grandiose promises.
