Ukraine Calls on Brazilians to Enlist as Volunteers in the War Against Russia. Defense Ministry Expands International Recruitment Campaign. See the Details
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense launched a campaign to recruit South American volunteers, including Brazilians, to join its Army. The action takes place in the third year of war against Russia.
A video released by the Ukrainian government states that the number of international volunteers in the war against Russia has increased by 2.5 times. The material promises full support to recruits: food, clothing, protection, weaponry, and monthly payment.
During combat missions, the salary can reach 4,500 dollars per month, which is equivalent to over R$ 25,000. Additionally, the training includes instruction on how to operate drones, work as a combat medic, and handle modern weaponry.

“During the period of participation in combat operations, the salary can reach 4,500 US dollars per month (over R$ 25,000 at current exchange rate),” said the video. “But the most important thing is the training. We train drone operators, combat medics, and operators of the most advanced weapons here.”
Rules for Enlistment and Selection Process
On the campaign’s website, the Ukrainian government describes enlistment as “a unique opportunity to secure a profession that will provide income for the rest of your life.”
To participate, one must be between 18 and 60 years old, be physically fit, have no criminal records or chronic diseases, and have legal entry into the country. Ukraine does not provide visas and does not cover travel expenses.
The selection process occurs in stages. First, the candidate submits an initial application. Then, the documents are evaluated. The next stage includes interviews, which can be in-person or virtual, and physical and psychological fitness tests.
The positions offered include roles in artillery, tank operation, and technician for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Brazilian Participation and Conflict Risks
On the official website, testimonials from volunteers reinforce the campaign’s appeal. One of the reports is from “JC,” a Brazilian with experience in the Kosovo war, who has been active in Ukraine since February 2023. He stated: “The most important thing is to be prepared” and added: “Together, we are strong.”
Despite the visibility of the initiative, it is still difficult to know how many Brazilians are involved in the conflict. According to Itamaraty, 12 Brazilians have died in the war between February 2022 and December 2024.
At the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, more than 100 Brazilians came forward as volunteers, but current estimates indicate that only about 40 remain active in Ukrainian territory.
