States Set Adjustment for Gasoline, Diesel, and LPG Starting in January 2026
The state governments, through the National Council of Tax Policy (Confaz), confirmed an increase in the Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services (ICMS).
The measure will take effect on January 1, 2026.
The decision, published in the Federal Official Gazette, raises the rates for gasoline, ethanol, diesel, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
Gasoline and Ethanol Will Have an Increase of R$ 0.10 per Liter
According to the agreement made, the national unified charge for gasoline and ethanol will increase from the current R$ 1.47 to R$ 1.57 per liter.
The price has been frozen since January 2025.
Therefore, the increase of R$ 0.10 per liter will take effect at the beginning of next year.
Thus, consumers will feel the direct impacts at the pumps right after the turn of 2026.
Diesel Increases by R$ 0.05 and Will Cost More
In addition to the adjustment in gasoline and ethanol, state finance secretaries also defined an increase in diesel.
The ICMS rate on this fuel will rise from R$ 1.12 to R$ 1.17 per liter.
The increase represents an addition of R$ 0.05.
The decision will take effect along with other adjustments in January 2026.
This move reinforces the burden on transportation and national logistics.

New Fiat EV, priced at R$ 77,000, will bring a reinterpretation of the 147 and a consumption equivalent to 70 km/l.
-
Petrobras surprises the market by cutting diesel by R$ 0.35 per liter, and the decision may ease the tax impact for drivers and transport companies.

Gasoline at R$ 4.99 makes drivers wait more than an hour at Havan gas stations in Santa Catarina, during a “zero tax” promotion with a limit of 15 liters per car and 25,000 liters available across five units of the network.
LPG Will Have an Increased Rate of R$ 0.08 Next Year
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) will also see an increase in 2026.
The rate will go from R$ 1.39 to R$ 1.47 per liter.
The adjustment will be applied starting in January 2026.
The increase of R$ 0.08 per liter reflects the same correction movement defined by Confaz.
The measure aims to standardize state revenue nationwide.
Confaz Justifies Adjustment as a Measure of National Standardization
According to Confaz, the adjustment aims to maintain the national unification of the ICMS charge on fuels. This measure seeks to ensure predictability and balance.
Furthermore, the decision was officially recorded in the Federal Official Gazette in September 2025. Thus, the document formalized the tax change at the national level.
The agreement was made between the state finance secretaries. Thus, the initiative reinforces cooperation among the states to avoid fiscal distortions.
Although the justification is for standardization and stability in revenue, the adjustment is expected to generate debates. Nonetheless, experts warn of significant social and economic repercussions.
The economic impact affects consumers, transportation companies, and sectors dependent on fossil fuel-based energy. Therefore, the topic is expected to remain prominent in the coming months.
