Logistics Overview of Corn Ethanol in Mato Grosso Focused on Pipelines, Highways, Railways, and Waterways to Enhance Competitiveness and National Distribution
Billion-Dollar Project Boosts New Phase of Ethanol
Initially, during the 3rd UNEM Datagro International Conference, held on April 16, in Cuiabá, the logistical advancement was highlighted as essential.
Additionally, in the panel on distribution, former senator Cidinho Santos, CEO of Grupo MC Empreendimentos e Participações, presented the strategic project.
In this context, the plan includes a 2,100-kilometer pipeline, connecting Sinop (MT) to Paulínia (SP), with an estimated investment of R$ 22 billion.

3 times more ethanol per hectare can be produced with Eike Batista’s supercane amid rising gasoline prices — how can this technology change fuel prices in Brazil?

Former president of IBP highlights that dependence on diesel imports pressures prices in Brazil, increases vulnerability to global crises, and underscores the need for more robust and sustainable energy policies.

On the other hand, according to Cidinho himself, the project has already attracted interest from the federal government for inclusion in the PAC.
At the same time, private investors are also showing interest, which could accelerate the execution of the project.
High Capacity and Guaranteed Demand from the Start
Furthermore, the executive emphasized that the capacity of the pipeline will be 13 million cubic meters.
Meanwhile, current production is around 8 million cubic meters, ensuring an initial occupancy close to 70%.
Thus, according to him, the investment is already born with a consolidated demand.
Consequently, this marks a new moment for biofuels, especially corn ethanol in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul.
Accelerated Growth of Production in the State
Simultaneously, logistical advancement accompanies the growth of the industry.
Currently, Mato Grosso leads the country in corn ethanol production, with 5.6 billion liters in the 2024/2025 harvest.
Thus, the state accounts for about 70% of national production.
Additionally, there are currently 17 plants in operation, including:
- 9 units dedicated to corn
- 3 flex plants (corn and sugarcane)
Therefore, this scenario highlights the expansion and diversification of the sector.
Projections Indicate Continuous Advancement Until 2027
Subsequently, estimates point to continued growth.
The corn grinding may reach 26.8 million tons in the 2026/2027 harvest.
In this sense, the increase exceeds 19%, driven by new units and expansion of installed capacity.
Additionally, the sector enhances the added value of corn, with production of:
- Ethanol
- DDGS for animal nutrition
- Bioelectricity
Consequently, the impacts are reflected in employment, income, and revenue.
Road infrastructure and new modalities strengthen flow
In addition to the ethanol pipeline, Cidinho highlighted the duplication of BR-163, led by Nova Rota Oeste.
Currently, this is considered the largest road project in the country.
As a result, logistics costs should be reduced, while the flow of production will be expanded.
At the same time, the debate included experts such as Luiz Antonio Pagot (former DNIT), Edeon Vaz (ADECON), and Fernando Dihel (Ultracargo).
North Arc expands distribution alternatives
On the other hand, according to Edeon Vaz, the North Arc emerges as a strategic alternative.
In this model, the flow occurs via Miritituba and Barcarena, serving the Northeast.
Moreover, the expansion of the concession of BR-163 to Pará should enable new improvements.
Thus, as highlighted, this route does not compete with the ethanol pipeline, but complements it.
Waterways emerge as an efficient logistical solution
Finally, Luiz Antonio Pagot advocated for the use of waterways as a more competitive option.
According to him, ethanol can be transported to Santarém and subsequently distributed by barges.
Thus, the integration with the Port of Itaqui creates an efficient logistical hub.
Consequently, transportation costs can be reduced, expanding the product’s reach.
Given this integrated scenario among the ethanol pipeline, highways, and waterways, can corn ethanol from Mato Grosso reach new markets and enhance its national competitiveness?
