Avenida 9 de Julio, located in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is officially the widest avenue in the world. With about 140 meters in width and a total of 16 lanes, it continues to impress residents and tourists. Its name refers to the date of Argentine independence, celebrated on July 9.

The construction of the avenue began with grand ambitions. The Argentine capital, nicknamed “Paris of South America”, wanted to reinforce this title with a monumental roadway.

Inspiration came from the Champs-Élysées in Paris, but the intent was to surpass the French model with a wider and more imposing avenue.

A Crossing That Tests The Clock

A recent video posted on TikTok shows a user crossing the entire width of Avenida 9 de Julio. Even walking faster than usual, it took him 4 minutes and 17 seconds to cross. The time includes waiting periods at traffic lights. In comparison, crossing a typical avenue takes an average of 25 seconds.

The title of the widest avenue in the world is secured by a technical detail. Avenida 9 de Julio incorporates Carlos Pellegrini Street to the east and Cerrito Street to the west.

Together, they add six additional lanes. Without this junction, the width of the avenue would drop to 120 meters, below the officially recorded 140 meters.
