A significant regional military mobilization was announced on Thursday, 19, by North Korea, attracting international attention.
Leader Kim Jong Un presided over a ceremony to present 50 new launcher vehicles intended for short-range missiles with nuclear capability, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
The display took place ahead of an important Workers’ Party congress, which increases the political weight of the announcement.
Thus, the event reinforces North Korea’s military strategy at a critical moment in the party’s calendar.

Military Demonstration Precedes Party Congress

The images released by state media showed rows of launcher trucks lined up near the April 25 Culture House, the site that hosted party congresses in 2016 and 2021.
Moreover, the symbolic positioning of the equipment reinforces the connection between the military agenda and domestic political issues.
According to KCNA, the vehicles support the multiple rocket launcher systems of 600 millimeters.
In this way, the government highlights the expansion of its operational capabilities for short-range systems.

Speech Reinforces Focus on Strategic Mission

During the speech, Kim described the launchers as “wonderful”.
Additionally, he stated that the systems are equipped with artificial intelligence and advanced guidance technologies.
According to him, the equipment was developed to fulfill a “strategic mission”, a term associated with nuclear purpose.
Therefore, the speech reinforces the continuation of the military modernization program.

As stated, the next party congress will present new plans to expand the nuclear armed forces.
Currently, according to state media, the country already possesses systems directed at U.S. allies in Asia.
Moreover, it maintains long-range missiles potentially capable of reaching the continental United States.

Inter-Korean Relations Remain Tense

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, Kim’s sister, involved in foreign policy, commented on relations with South Korea.
Although she acknowledged a South Korean minister’s apology regarding alleged incursions by civilian drones, she stated that the North is reinforcing border security.
According to her, the South continues to be regarded as an “enemy”.
Thus, the speech reaffirms the current climate of tension.

Since 2019, virtually all inter-Korean negotiations and cooperation initiatives have been suspended.
That year, nuclear diplomacy between Kim Jong Un and former U.S. President Donald Trump faltered due to sanctions led by Washington.
Consequently, relations deteriorated progressively.

New Political Guidelines on the Korean Peninsula

In recent years, Kim has abandoned the former goal of peaceful reunification.
Instead, he declared the existence of a hostile “two-state” system on the Korean Peninsula.
This position could be institutionalized in the Workers’ Party Constitution during the next congress.
