Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid faces strong competition from BYD Song Pro, which achieves record sales and threatens Toyota's leadership

The Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid, one of the main hybrid SUVs on the Brazilian market, has faced strong competition from BYD Song Pro. With falling sales and a growing preference for the model from BYD, the dispute between these two SUVs promises to be fierce in the coming months, according to the Web Motors website.

Fall in sales of the hybrid Corolla Cross

In October, the Corolla Cross hybrid recorded its worst performance of 2024, with only 898 units registered. This number contrasts sharply with the peak sales in May., right after the model's facelift, when 1.304 units were sold. Since the launch of the Song Pro in July, sales of the Corolla Cross have begun to decline, reflecting the growing popularity of its competitor.

BYD Song Proโ€™s Impressive Growth

The BYD Song Pro, launched in July 2024, started modestly, with 442 units sold in the first month. However, BYD's SUV quickly gained traction, reaching a record 4.083 registrations in December, becoming the best-selling hybrid car in the period.

Despite only starting sales in the middle of the year, Song Pro has accumulated 9.671 units sold, an impressive mark considering the 13.458 hybrid SUVs sold by the Corolla Cross throughout the year. The trend indicates that the Song Pro could overtake the Corolla Cross in 2025.

Price and version comparison

Both SUVs offer competitive hybrid options:

  • Toyota corolla cross:
    • XRV Hybrid: R$ 206.290
    • XRX Hybrid: R$ 212.890
  • BYD SongPro:
    • GL: R$ 189.800
    • GS: R$ 199.800

With more affordable prices, the BYD Song Pro has a competitive advantage, which may explain part of its rapid growth in the market.

Despite both having hybrid in their names, BYD's technology is far ahead in terms of battery life and plug-in. This is what caused the Corolla to lose market share.
